Defense And Special Teams Spark Win For NHS Football Team
Newtown High School’s football team traveled to Daniel Hand of Madison and earned a 28-0 win behind solid defense and some timely second-half offense on a chilly September 23 night.
The scoring was sparked by special teams. After scoreless first half, Andrew Swierbut got things going with a second-half opening kickoff return for a touchdown. The 82-yard return to paydirt was all Newtown needed.
Quarterback Dylan Magazu’s 19-yard rushing TD made it 14-0 after three quarters of play. Newtown tacked on a pair of scores in the final quarter on a Magazu 18-yard run and Caleb Smith 25-yard scoring rush.
Newtown is home on Friday, September 30, when Pomperaug of Southbury visits Blue & Gold Stadium at 7 pm.
