Yoga Al Fresco To Benefit Leukemia And Lymphoma Society

On Saturday, October 1, Susan Gold, certified yoga instructor, will be facilitating a yoga class al fresco at 10 am overlooking the Pootatuck River in Sandy Hook behind demitasse café, at 3 Glen Road. Donations are gratefully accepted and will support the efforts of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

“We will practice yoga on a lovely platform framed by Greek columns,” Ms Gold said of the unique outdoor venue.

Since this outdoor yoga event is weather dependent, a rain date has been set for Sunday, October 2, at 10 am.

“I would sit outside on the deck of demitasse and think how wonderful to practice yoga outside in such a lovely natural setting with the water flowing behind you as cool breezes surround you,” Ms Gold said.

So she decided to offer the yoga class as a benefit for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as she herself is a survivor of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Café co-owners Jerid O’Connell and Mike Landry will serve the post yoga refreshments for the benefit.

The yoga class called “Sukha Flow” will increase flexibility, improve one’s immune system, promote good posture, relax muscles and enhance coordination, said Ms Gold. Emphasis will be on working the core muscles safely and effectively with each sequence, designed for all levels with modifications as needed, she added.

A competitive age group runner for nearly 20 years, Ms Gold has completed 15 marathons and ten triathlons, including the Timberman Half Ironman in 2006. She came to yoga as a way to incorporate flexibility and stretching into her training routine.

Ms Gold is currently the executive director of the Westport Historical Society, where she will teach yoga to children who participate in their youth programs. She currently works one day a week as a volunteer with rehabilitation services at St Vincent’s Hall-Brooke and teaches yoga to the adolescents in the hospital.

In 2010, she taught yoga at the Lake Placid Training Camp for athletes preparing for the Lake Placid Ironman competition. She is also a frequent participant in workshops held at the Kripalu Center for yoga and health in Lenox, Mass.

Space at this Sandy Hook benefit yoga session is limited, so reservations are required.  There will also be some raffle gifts.

Suggested donation $20 but any amount will be gratefully accepted. All money raised will support the on-going work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Anyone interested in participating should e-mail sueg43@aol.com to make a reservation or call 203-257-8598 for more information.
