Take A Hike: Guided Walk Through Brunot Preserve, September 24

The public is invited to join members of Newtown Forest Association (NFA) for a guided hike at the Brunot Preserve on Saturday, September 24, at 1 pm. Dr Aaron Coopersmith, a member of the NFA board, will lead the hike. The rain date is Sunday, September 25

Largely hidden from view on Taunton Lake Road, the preserve features a variety of beautiful and diverse habitat. Dr Coopersmith recently spearheaded an effort to add to the existing white trail — an old farm road going through the middle of the preserve — with a new trail following near the preserve’s perimeter. This new trail showcases the land’s diversity as it meanders from the Taunton Hill Road trail head, past three enormous glacial erratics, and through woods, wetlands and meadows.

Hikers should meet before 1 pm at the Brunot parking area and trail head on Taunton Hill Road. Those planning to attend are asked to arrive early and bring proper footwear, clothing, sun/bug spray, and something to drink. The hike will cover approximately four miles.

The Newtown Forest Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the oldest private land trust in Connecticut. NFA is dedicated to preserving open space and natural resources in Newtown, for the benefit of the community and all nature lovers. Currently more than 1,000 acres are preserved through NFA stewardship, thanks to the support of membership dues and generous donors. The NFA cooperates with but operates independently from the Town of Newtown and receives no funding from the town.
