Inspirational Scientist, Loving Husband
And Father
David Bryant Batt, 42, Wayland, Mass., died unexpectedly of natural causes, Sunday, September 18, while participating in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. He was born in Baltimore, Md., October 21, 1968, the son of Linda E. (Ebert) Batt of Rensselaer Falls, N.Y., and the late Donald S. Batt.
Dr Batt was a graduate of Newtown High School and received his BS in biochemistry from Purdue University. He received his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Connecticut and his postdoctoral degree from Harvard University with Dana Farber Cancer Institute. He had been a senior scientist since 1998 with Novartis in Cambridge. His co-workers describe him as an exceptional scientist who inspired others and who was respectful of people independently of title and importance. His colleagues remember his intelligence and his great sense of humor.
He was a loving family man who will be missed by his wife Julie, and his three sons, Ethan, Brandon, and Garrett. He joins his father and daughter Ashley in death.
He was generous and loyal. Dr Batt was devoted to his wife and their children, and enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, especially kayaking, fishing, and camping trips. A skilled handyman, he was never without a hammer and a project underway.
A memorial service celebrating his life will take place Saturday, September 24, at 4 pm, at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Route 30), Wayland, Mass. After the service, the family will receive family and friends at their home, at 33 Campbell Road, Wayland. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family, at a later date.
