The Ella Grasso Center For Women Scholarship Essay Contest
The mission of the Connecticut Womenâs Hall of Fame is to honor publicly the achievements of Connecticut women, preserve their stories, educate the public, and inspire the continued achievements of women and girls.
The Ella Tambussi Grasso Center for Women in Politics is dedicated to honoring the late Connecticut governor and her trailblazing career and commitment to public service.
The Grasso Center, as a program of the Hall of Fame, is initiating an academic scholarship for young women from around the state, based on the former governorâs history of civic engagement and social responsibility.
A scholarship essay competition has been announced.
The essay has a 750-word (three page) maximum. The applicant must be a young woman in her junior or senior year of high school.
Applicants must also provide the name and telephone number of two references; one must be a teacher or guidance counselor from their school, the other can be chosen at the studentâs discretion.
The essay topic must pertain to the field of civic engagement and tell how that experience has influenced the studentâs perception of politics and social responsibility.
Suggested areas of focus are:
Is your civic or community work based on inspiration gained from the knowledge of historic women?
How does history impact the effectiveness of activism in the present?
Is civic engagement or the wider task of social involvement impeded by either your age or gender?
Judging will be merit based. The structure, composition, and originality of the essay will each be considered.
The essays must be received by Monday, October 3, before 5 pm. They should be sent to Anne Leonard at the Connecticut Womenâs Hall of Fame, 1265 Asylum Avenue, Hartford CT 06105-2206.
The winner will be notified by Friday, October 14.
