Fein To Deliver Humanitarian Lecture At Fairfield University
FAIRFIELD â Leonard Fein, one of the worldâs foremost writers on contemporary Jewish life and the founder of Mazon, will deliver the annual Jacoby-Lunin Humanitarian Lecture on Wednesday, September 28, at Fairfield Universityâs Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The 8 pm lecture, entitled âScandals, Values and the Pursuit of Justice,â is sponsored by Open Visions Forum, an outreach program of University College, and Fairfield Universityâs Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies.
Mr Fein, known internationally for his insightful commentary, has written more than 800 articles and essays appearing in such publications as The New York Times, The New Republic, The Nation, The Los Angeles Times, Commonweal, Commentary and Moment, the magazine on Jewish affairs he founded in 1974.
He is also the author of several acclaimed books, including his most recent, Against the Dying of the Light: A Parentâs Story of Love, Loss and Hope (Jewish Lights Publishing, 2004), a poignant and brutally honest look at the death of his 30-year-old daughter, Nomi.
Mr Fein has been sharing his insights and deep wisdom with audiences and students alike since the 1960s, when he taught political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he also served as deputy director of the MIT/Harvard Joint Center for Urban Studies.
Most recently Mr Fein founded the nine-year-old National Jewish Coalition for Literacy, a project mobilizing the American Jewish community to provide 100,000 volunteer tutors for the Read America program. The NJCL has tutoring programs in 39 American cities.
Mr Fein is a much sought-after speaker on campuses and in communities around the world. He has been the keynote speaker at more than 100 conventions and has lectured at 60 college campuses and in more than a dozen foreign countries.
