12th Annual Health & Public Safety Fair

Saturday At The Middle School

The 12th annual Newtown Health and Public Safety Fair will be held, rain or shine, from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, September 24, at the middle school on Queen Street. There will be more than 65 exhibitors this year, the most ever. Everything is free.

There will be drawings every 30 minutes plus a drawing for a mountain bike provided by Newtown Chamber of Commerce.

Outside displays and demonstrations will include Newtown Ambulance, Newtown Underwater Search and Rescue, the Dodgingtown Fire Company, Hawleyville Fire Company, an extraction by the Botsford Fire Company, the Newtown Hook & Ladder aerial truck, the Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue truck, demonstrations of the thermal imaging cameras, and, weather permitting, a visit by the Life Star helicopter.

The Paproski’s Castle Hill Farm will bring cows and other animals. Marcus Dairy will provide free milk.

Wellness on Wheels, the WOW van of Danbury Hospital, will be on the front lawn of the school with Dr Jack Fong and his staff ready to perform well child screenings and health checks. All of the medical screening will be in a private setting in the van and all information will be confidential. Dr Fong will be available to answer health questions. Reservations are not required but may be made by calling the Newtown Health District at 270-4291.

The second annual Pumpkin Walk co-sponsored by Newtown Parks & Recreation will be held at noon beginning in front of the middle school. The easy, noncompetitive walk will benefit the Newtown Fund. Preregister by calling Dr Della Schmidt at 426-5500 or Parks & Rec at 270-4340. The fee is $5 for adults and $1 for children under 16, or $6 and $2 for registering on the day of the event.

There will be five exhibits by Danbury Hospital in the gym and classrooms as well as free screenings for blood pressure, posture and scoliosis, cholesterol, vision, hearing, foot and ankle disorders, and skin cancer, plus exhibits by the American Red Cross’s disaster and health and safety unit, Aqua Environmental Lab, Arthritis Associates of Connecticut and New York, Ashlar of Newtown, Bethel Visiting Nurse Association, Chartwell’s School Dining, Children’s Adventure Center, Colonial Chiropractic, Connecticut VNA, Danbury VNA; Dental Associates, Drs Dudley, Condon and Golisanover, and Dr Henry Gellert, Dr William Notaro, dermatologist, Families Network of Western Connecticut; Homesteads of Newtown; Hopeline Women’s Center; Kevin’s Community Center, Mental Health Association of Connecticut, MCCA, Misty Morning Children’s Center, Newtown Footcare Group, Newtown Lions Club, Newtown Health District, Newtown Police Department and its Crime Prevention unit, Newtown Prevention Council, Newtown Youth Services, Nuture Katering To Kids, OSHA, Porco’s Karate Academh, Prudential Financial, and Shaklee Corp.

There will be information and products from alternative and holistic medicine providers, exhibits by Yoga Dimensions, Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), Connecticut Tick Control, and Angels Watching Over You.

St Vincent’s Women’s Imaging will provide mammography screenings.

The Newtown Woman’s Club is sponsoring a poster contest for elementary school students on “My Family and Friends Enjoy Eating My Favorite Healthy Food.” Prizes will be awarded by age groups. The Chamber of Commerce is holding a free drawing for a GT Timberline Comfort mountain bike provided by World of Bikes.
