Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Work on crafts for the holiday bazaar on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 and 2 to 3 pm.

*Special Note: Looking for donations of yarn and material for the upcoming Holiday Bazaar.

*Learn the waltz, fox trot, tango, swing, cha cha, rumba, mambo, and merengue on Wednesdays at 1 pm. No partners needed; this is line dancing.

*Come cheer on your favorite horse in the race on Wednesday, September 26, at 1 pm.

 

Upcoming Programs

*Bakers Wanted! A bake sale will be on the third Monday of the month from 9 to 10 am. Bring donations of baked goods in before that time.

*Flu shots are available every Tuesday in October from 9 am to noon. Proof of insurance must be presented. No appointment necessary.

*Bingo will be October 17 and 31 at 1 pm.

*Halloween costume party will follow bingo on October 31. Wear a costume or borrow one from the Senior Center. Enjoy some refreshments. Call to sign up.

*Annual Harvest Bazaar open house preview is Thursday, November 8, 5 to 7 pm. Regular hours are November 9, 9 am to 5 pm; November 10, 9 am to 4 pm; and November 11, 9 am to noon. Come do some early holiday shopping. Included will be afghans, quilts, hats, mittens, scarves, jewelry, holiday ornaments and decorations, baked goods, and an array of other goodies.

 

Day Trips

*The Royal Manor in Garfield, N.J., is hosting a traditional Bavarian-style festival party, “Ocktoberfest ist Wunderbar,” on Thursday, October 4. Sauerbraten and roast chicken will be served family style. Two complimentary drinks during happy hour and great entertainment provided. Depart at 9:15 am; cost is $86.

Visit the Adams Farm in Southern Vermont on Wednesday, October 10, enjoy a comfy wagon ride on the hillside farm, an agricultural presentation in a barn theater, lunch at the Old Red Mill, old-fashioned apple pie ala mode at the Apple Barn. Cost is $99.

*The Inn at Villa Bianca’s annual Halloween Bash is Wednesday, October 24, 11:30 am to 2 pm. All you can eat family-style luncheon and entertainment for $29.95. The van can accommodate 16 and will depart at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool.

*Upcoming Trips: King Neptune’s USO Show in Virginia Beach October 14–18; and the eastern Caribbean with Norwegian Cruise Lines November 25–December 3. To find out about these trips and others that are being offered, visit the Newtown Senior Center.

Wednesday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm, line dance/ballroom dancing; 2:15 pm, Bridges.

Thursday: 10:30 am Iris fold cards; noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble; 1 pm, yoga; 1:30 Wii bowling; 3 pm Polynesian/Hawaiian dance lessons.

Friday: 9 am, Zumba Gold and mah jongg; 10:30 am, exercise or quilting or sewing; noon, knit or crochet; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table, and various board games.

Monday: Salmon fillet with dill sauce & lemon, rice pilaf, mixed vegetables, wheat dinner doll, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: Spinach ravioli, sauce, meatball, broccoli, garlic bread, fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Quiche Lorraine, broiled tomato, California blend veggies, herbed breadstick, pears.

Thursday: Happy Birthday: Pot roast with gravy, mashed potato, green beans, rye bread, pineapple juice, birthday cake.
