Open House At Little Red School House, Sept. 30

Newtown Historical Society will host its an Annual Children’s Day at The Little Red School House, on the grounds of Middle Gate School, 7 Cold Spring Road, on Sunday, September 30, from noon until 2 pm.

Costumed docents will conduct “class” inside the school house for children ages 5-10, and recess activities will take place outside. Docents will teach and organize colonial era games such as Graces, Trundling a Hoop, Sack Races, and Tug of War.

Class will begin promptly at 12:30 pm with a hornbook craft. In the event of rain, class will still be held but the outside events will be cancelled.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed and appreciated. Donations will benefit the historical society, allowing members to continue offering programs such as this.

Newtown Historical Society acquired the school house in 1968, and relocated the structure from its original site on Toll Gate Hill (now Route 25) to its present location.

The Historical Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization. During the year members host open houses with living history demonstrations, a lecture series, a summer history camp  and many special events.  All funding comes from private donations, membership dues, bequests and fundraisers.
