I thought for a moment on Tuesday evening that I was going to be whisked away by the wind, but here I am, not even a whisker out of place. I hear that Ed and Aida Kiernan had some arcing and sparking in front of their place, though, when a fallen limb disconnected the wires running from the street to their garage. CL&P was quick to respond, I’m happy to report, but not before the Kiernans watched a number of people drive right over the live wire. Luckily, no one got hurt. Just for future reference, though, downed wires should be avoided. Turn around, and please, no driving over one.

Newtown Arts Festival co-chair Donna Mangiafico mentioned this week that the dates for next year’s festival have already been set: September 21–22. Whether you missed out or want to make sure to return, mark your calendar. Meanwhile, art contest information, guidelines, and applications can be found online at NewtownArtsFestival.com.

The producers of the award-winning AMC television series Mad Men will auction off a walk-on role for Season 6, which begins shooting in November. Proceeds from this charity auction will benefit a trust established for the three young children of Newtown resident Scott Getzinger, a highly regarded Hollywood property master who was killed in a car accident last spring. Scott worked on numerous big films and TV series, with credits including Shutter Island, Salt, Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, Spiderman 2 and 3, Independence Day, The Patriot, Ocean’s Twelve, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, American Gangster, The Dark Knight Rises and Men In Black III. He was also the property master on Showtime’s Masters & Johnson and AMC’s Rubicon. Scott’s sister, Jennifer Getzinger, is a frequent director on Mad Men, most recently having directed the two-hour Season 5 premiere, “A Little Kiss.” Information about the auction is available through Auction Cause at http://is.gd/madmenwalkon6. Bidding is on eBay, September 20 to 30. I wonder if four paws are eligible to walk on the set? I don’t even need a fur coat supplied to be as dapper as Mrs Draper…

You don’t want to be missing any pets — or small children — so Chris and Kirsten Kirkman want residents to be aware that there is a bobcat browsing the Horseshoe Ridge Road area. Chris was working at home last Friday, September 14, when he glanced out the window and saw a large bobcat strolling across the driveway. He called to Kristen, who got this photo and a few others (from a safe distance) of the cat on their driveway retaining wall. “We have a 3-year-old, a 6-year-old, and a 14-year-old,” Kristen said, and the littler ones like to ride their bikes in the driveway. With Bobby Bobcat on the prowl, midday, though, Kristen said that she will be paying a lot more attention to the surroundings when the kids are playing outdoors now. I think that goes ditto for allowing pets to roam outdoors, too. Although only about twice the size of the average housecat, and preferring smaller game, according to the CT DEEP, a bobcat is capable of bringing down an animal the size of a goat.

The Friends of the C.H. Booth Library book sale volunteers are hard at it again, and in unpacking donations one day this week one of the volunteer found a few coin folders dating back to the 1960s. If you lived through that era, you remember them: the dark blue, cardboard folders with slots for collectible pennies, dimes, and quarters. Each of the folders found contains a few coins, so the Friends are seeking a coin expert to help them determine any value and disposition. If you have knowledge of valuable coins and are willing to volunteer some time, please call the library at 203-426-4533 and leave a message for the Friends.

The next best thing to our annual book sale is the annual Giant Tag Sale at Nunnawauk Meadows, sponsored each year by the Nunnawauk Meadows Residents Association. It’s coming up, Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30, in the Community Room of Nunnawauk Meadows, at 3 Nunnawauk Road, off of Mile Hill Road South. I’m told there are a lot of great items being offered: jewelry, household goods, games, linens, and much more. The Giant Tag Sale begins at 9 am each day, and runs until 3 pm.

Fraser Woods Montessori school nurse Connie Brescia found time last week to give some TLC to 4-year-old student Trey Hoekenga’s stuffed dog “Jenny.” Trey’s own arm is in a cast as the result of a fall, and he brought Jenny down to the nurse to see if she could bandage up Jenny, who was also “hurt” in the fall.

The first day of autumn falls this Saturday, September 22. Time to put away the gardening tools and get out the rakes, I guess. Just because the days are getting cooler doesn’t mean it’s time to put away the golf clubs, though, as any dedicated golfer knows. The Newtown/Monroe Chambers of Commerce will host their annual Golf Outing, Wednesday, October 3, at the Whitney Farms Golf Course in Monroe. Registration is open to the public. Cost is $150 per person and includes lunch, greens fees, and admittance to the Business After Hours. Nongolfers may attend at the Business After Hours for $50 per person. Reservations and prepayment are required for golf and lunch. Registration is at 10 am, followed by lunch and the shotgun start at 11 am. For more information, see the Sports section of this week’s Newtown Bee, or visit www.monroectchamber.com/GolfOuting.

I can’t list every pet that goes missing, but here’s a switch. Lauren Mascali sends us a note that this kitty found in Norwalk on September 8 may be from Newtown, according to a PAWS Facebook post. If you recognize her sweet face and have lost a female tiger cat, approximately 10 years old, please contact Lauren at 203-845-0678 or on her cell at 203-984-9532.

Summer might be over, but I’m still hot — on the trail of news, that is. Remember next week to… Read me again!
