Griffin Physician Specialists Provide Health Empowerment Series

DERBY —Did you know that walking puts up to 1.5 times your bodyweight on your foot? Or that while floaters, cataracts, and glaucoma are common conditions of the elderly, there is no reason to “put up” with vision problems, regardless of your age. And if you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from joint pain or shoulder pain or injury, relief is available.

Nine Griffin Hospital physicians will be presenting talks over the course of the fall season of Griffin Hospital’s Health Empowerment Series, an ongoing series of informational talks designed to provide information about some of the latest treatments and procedures, answer questions, and empower members of the general public to be active participants in their health care. Topics include:

*“The Ankle Bone’s Connected to the Foot Bone” — Wednesday, October 10, at 6:30 pm. Dr Gary Richo, the only orthopedist in the area who is fellowship-trained in foot and ankle surgery, will discuss the intricacies of the body’s “foundation” and share his expertise in caring for patients suffering from foot or ankle pain.

*“The Eye Over Time: Common Problems and Solutions” — Tuesday, October 16, at 3 pm. Common vision problems may be a part of aging, but there are things that can be done to alleviate their effects and maintain an active lifestyle. Dr Joseph L. Sokol will discuss a range of eye conditions (blurred vision, halos, blind spots, floaters, cataracts, and glaucoma) and describe normal changes that occur with age and abnormal changes caused by age-related eye disease.

*“Don’t Let Knee Pain Slow You Down!” — Wednesday, October 24, at 2 pm. Millions of Americans are living lifestyles compromised by chronic knee pain due to arthritis. Dr Ignatius Komninakas, a board certified orthopedic physician with expertise in joint replacement surgery, will discuss arthritis and the different causes of knee pain and discuss the latest in surgical and nonsurgical treatment.

*“The Cure for an Aching Shoulder!” — Tuesday, October 30, at 6:30 pm. While shoulder pain is an extremely common complaint with many causes, persistent symptoms or pain may indicate a need for medical diagnosis and treatment. Dr Robert W. Nolan, a board certified orthopedic surgeon, will discuss shoulder pain, its common causes, and the latest in arthroscopic surgery, a minimally invasive alternative for those requiring surgery.

Other upcoming programs include “Advances in Hip Replacement Surgery” to be presented by Dr Joel W. Malin on November 6; “EECP” A Nonsurgical Treatment for Angina” by Dr Kenneth V. Schwartz on November 13; “Snoring: It’s No Laughing Matter!” by Dr Marya Chaisson on November 27; and “Diabetes and Nonhealing Wounds” by Dr Liquin Song and Dr Kenneth Dobuler on December 4.
