A Proven Track Record

To the Editor:

As the CMT, CAPT and SAT scores come in, the realizable results of our hard earned dollars  correlates with the success of the students’ test scores, practical knowledge, and aptitude. It is essential that we ensure a balance between what we fund and the outcome.

I do not believe we should fund education at all costs, but prioritize the funding of projects on a town wide level so we can achieve that balance.  The necessary high school expansion project, included in the $97 million worth of capital improvements to our schools is one piece of the pie that has become so dire, we struggle to maintain our bare curriculum and district needs. I believe that we must propel our town forward to protect the investment we have already made in our students, which in turn protects the investment in our town.  The effects of our faltering facilities have prevented us from moving Newtown forward.

There are currently bills in the state that address grants for schools that teach an Asian language and ones to promote full day kindergarten, as well as bills that deal with the standardization of pre-school curriculum. The state is also making available grants to school districts that build “green” by utilizing eco-friendly products that save our resources. There is emerging information on use of bio-diesel for school buses and its positive effects on children’s health,  and the reduction of usage of fossil fuels for heating of school buildings.  There are similar school districts where SMART boards outfit every classroom, and those that teach foreign language in the elementary grades, and ones that are moving higher in the list of top schools in the state  while Newtown’s high school remains on “warning.”  If our enrollment numbers decline, are students leaving for private schools or better school districts?  If our property values have suffered, is the market  reflecting our struggling school system?

Taking the mission statement of our schools to heart, I believe “we can, and will” move our system forward to address the multifaceted issues that surround us. As a Board Of Education candidate, my proven track record of project implementation and completion will significantly benefit our school system. I have a master’s degree in education, was the general contractor on the construction of my house and am the PTA president of Middle Gate School. I have been instrumental in maximizing the potential of our funds, realizing savings that netted our school an additional $4,300 SMART board. I significantly raised our membership, created the PTA web site for heightened communications, and authored the budget pamphlet that was received by all student bearing households in Newtown and have recently created a community outreach program.

You do have a choice in November.  Please read more about me and all our fine candidates  at www.independentpartyofnewtown.com.

Sincerely

Desiree Galassi
