DANBURY — Greater Danbury area residents can learn an important personal health statistic on Thursday, October 5, National Depression Screening Day. They can learn their depression score. Why should they care?

Recent studies reveal that heart attack survivors with major depression have a 3-4 times greater risk of dying within six months than those who do not suffer from depression.

The World Health Organization estimates that by the year 2020, major clinical depression will be the second most burdensome illness in the world, surpassing respiratory infections and tuberculosis.

Teen suicide rates have increased more than 300 percent since the 1950s. But most people can feel better with treatment.

Learn how to recognize the symptoms of depression and what treatments that are available at Danbury Hospital’s Community Center for Behavioral Health (CCBH) National Depression Screening Day program. There are private screening sessions on Thursday, October 5, from 8 to 9:30 am, and 5:30 to 7 pm. The screening takes place at CCBH, 152 West Street, Danbury.

National Depression Screening Day participants will have the opportunity to view an educational video on depression, complete a written screening test, and talk one-on-one with a mental health professional, free of charge.
