Sunday Afternoon Rollover Crash On I-84 Near Rochambeau Bridge Sends Two Drivers To Hospitals
One of two vehicles involved in an accident on eastbound Interstate 84, just west of Rochambeau Bridge, rolled over after the collision, which occurred about 4:40 pm on Sunday, September 16, officials said.
A 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero driven by Bruce Reilly, 64, of Brookfield, was traveling in the left lane of two lanes, while a 2012 Smart car driven by Patti Ann Calarese, 51, of Belchertown, Mass., was traveling in the right lane alongside the Saab, state police said. The Smart car then attempted to change lanes but sideswiped the Saab. After that impact, Calarese lost control of the Smart car, drove off the right side of the road, struck some guardrailing and then rolled over, according to state police.
Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company firefighters were dispatched to the accident, but were directed to return to their firehouse before arriving at the scene.
State police said both drivers received possible minor injuries.
Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Reilly to Danbury Hospital, where he went to the Emergency Department, after which he was discharged, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Southbury Ambulance Association volunteers transported Calarese to Waterbury Hospital, where she was discharged the same day, according to a hospital spokewoman.
Enforcement information was not available from state police.
