Dodging a burst of rain Tuesday morning, September 10, Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 members Tim Hoeffel and Chief Ray Corbo stepped inside the firehouse garage at 45 Main Street with Newtown Savings Bank Manager Ryan Storms.

With the help of Mr Corbo’s son Joey, the group assembled before a banner announcing the 2013 Firehouse Ride. Known this year as The Ride To Remember, the fourth annual fundraising motorcycle ride and pig roast on September 29 for a new firehouse will also support the Sandy Hook Family Healing Fund. Newtown Savings Bank is sponsoring this event.

Registration for the ride begins at 9 am at The One-Eyed Pig bar and restaurant at 71 South Main Street. Riders leave the bar at 11 am for an extended 50-mile route through surrounding towns before returning to the same location. Tickets for just the pig roast will also be available. Rider registration is $30, passengers are $15, and general admission for the pig roast is $15. During the day guests can meet with fire company members who will be in attendance. The estimated cost of a new building is $3.5 million, Mr Corbo said.

The company has outgrown its current location behind the Edmond Town Hall — the garage and storage spaces there are also in disrepair. Ideally, the company would relocate to space near the center of their district, which is the Route 25 and Route 302 intersection. Past possibilities have fallen through, and the company members continue their hunt for a new location and firehouse.

“We are still in the process of finding a location,” Mr Corbo said. He also noted that fire department members will be conducting separate fundraising efforts in town that day.

Hook & Ladder member Rob Manna said, “We are pursuing a piece of property on Church Hill Road and negotiating with the land owner now.” He hopes to secure the property “because we would like to be as close to the center of the district as possible.”
