Courage In 1864 And 2024

To the Editor,

Hundreds of prominent Republican leaders have crossed party lines to endorse Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for President of the United States. They do so to save democracy. They are not abandoning their party, they are acting to save the Union. This actually is the second time such actions were done to save the Union. In 1864 the Civil War was raging. Abraham Lincoln was up for re-election running against General George B. McClellan, the Democrat. (In 1864 the Democratic Party advocated for States’ Rights while the Republicans were proponents of a stronger Federal presence. Just the opposite of today’s Republican and Democratic parties.) McClellan campaigned to make peace with the Confederacy and end the war. Lincoln continued his insistence on preserving the Union. So many prominent Democrats crossed over to support Lincoln that a temporary unifying party, the National Union Party was established for the election. Lincoln won and the Union was saved. History has treated well these courageous Democrats who put country over party. So too will it be for these courageous Republicans. Here are some of them: Liz Cheney, Dick Cheney, Bill Weld, Joe Walsh, Stephanie Grisham, Chuck Hagel, Alberto Gonzales, Jimmy McCain, Olivia Troye, Geoff Duncan, Adam Kinzinger, John Warner, Barbara Comstock, Anthony Scaramucci, John Mitnick, George Will, Miles Taylor, Michael Steele, Richard Armitage, Paul Mitchell, Christine Todd Whitman, Charlie Dent, James Glassman, John Kasich, David Jolly, Meg Whitman, Mark Sanford, Peter Wehner, Jennifer Horn, Tom Ridge, and Evan McMullin.

Vote November 5th. Your country depends on you.

These are my opinions and not necessarily of any Board upon which I sit.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
