Scooter Stolen

A Founders Lane resident told police that sometime between 7:15 and 8:15 pm on September 10 someone stole a red “Goped” motorized scooter from the driveway of her home. The scooter was valued at $300. Anyone with information should call the Newtown police at 426-5841 or the tip line at 270-8888.

Tools Stolen At Two Sites

Numerous power tools were stolen from a construction site at 48 South Main Street sometime between 6 pm on September 11 and the following morning, according to the Newtown police, who also received a separate complaint that during the same night several chain saws were taken from a locked compartment on a chip truck parked in a side lot at 40 South Main Street. The truck is owned by Connecticut Tree Doctor, Inc. Anyone with any information about these incidents should contact the Newtown police.

Car Vandalized

Police that a complaint was received that a parked car was vandalized in the Queen Street shopping center near My Place restaurant sometime between 9:30 pm on September 11 and 1:30 am on September 12. The rear spoiler and reverse taillight were stolen from the victim’s 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Anyone with information should contact the Newtown police.

Growing Marijuana

Florence Fulton, 24, and Oliver Hoffman, 23, of 58 Orchard Hill Road were arrested on September 8 by the Connecticut Statewide Narcotics Task Force on a charge of illegal cultivation of marijuana. An investigation and search of their property was jointly conducted by the Newtown Police Detective Division and the task force during which five homegrown marijuana plants were seized from the property where they were growing. Fulton and Hoffman were charged and released on a promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on September 22.

Car Damaged

A Beagle Trail resident reported to police that sometime between the evening of September 13 and the following morning, his Lincoln Continental parked at the corner of Beagle Trail and New Lebbon Road was damaged. Anyone with information is asked to call the Newtown police.

School Bus Vandalized

Police said they received a complaint that sometime between 8:30 pm on September 13 and 8 am September 14 someone threw a rock through the window of a school bus parked in a driveway at 6 Pebble Road. The incident is under investigation.

DWI Charge

Caitlin S. Carvalho, 23, of 25-B Hundred Acres Road was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving too fast for conditions after her car went off the left side of Boggs Hill Road and wound up in a ditch on September 14 at 2:26 am. She was not injured. Carvalho was arrested, charged, and released on a $100 cash bond pending a scheduled appearance in Danbury Superior Court on September 30.

Uninsured Motorist

Richard Thomas, 40, of Oxford, turned himself in to Newtown police on September 12 after learning there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Thomas was charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance when he was involved in a motor vehicle accident on July 24 in Newtown. He was released on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on September 25.

 

Evading Responsibility

Lorie Beardsley, 35, of 8 Nunnawauk Road, was charged with evading responsibility after her vehicle allegedly hit a stockade fence on Round Hill Road on September 14 at 10:20 pm and then left the scene. Beardsley later was located and taken to the Newtown Police Department where she was charged and released on written promise to appear in court on September 30 to answer the charge.

Restricted Turn

Jessica Fanseca, 19, of Pebble Lane, was driving 1994 Nissan Pathfinder on a curve on Cedar Hill Road at 6:36 am on September 7 when she saw a deer enter the roadway. She told police that when she applied the brakes and swerved to the right to avoid hitting the deer, her vehicle went off the southbound shoulder of the road and struck rocks, damaging the vehicle, which had to be towed from the scene. There were no injuries. Fanseca was given a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Following Too Closely

Fausto Salinas, 21, of Danbury, was charged with following too closely and driving without a driver’s license when his 1992 Toyota Paseo struck the rear of a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Charles Ryan Clifford, 24, of New Haven on Berkshire Road at 3:27 pm on September 13. Police said Clifford was stopped in traffic when the Toyota struck the rear of the vehicle. The roadway was wet at the time, police said. There were no injuries.

Mailbox Found

Police said an apparently stolen mailbox was found on September 14 at 9:37 am on Currituck Road. Anyone who might have lost a mailbox before that date is asked to call the police department to possibly identify it as theirs.

Hi Barlow Road

Edward J. Shaw, 60, of 14 Castle Meadow Road, told police he was driving eastbound on Hi Barlow Road at 2:18 pm on September 11 when he drove to the far right to get by a landscape truck and trailer that was parked in the roadway on the right side of the westbound lane. In doing so, he lost control of his 2001 Volkswagen Passat, veered off the road onto the eastbound shoulder and struck a stonewall and mailboxes. The vehicle, the stonewall, and the mailboxes sustained substantial damage, according to police. There were no injuries. Shaw was given a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Toddy Hill Road

Peter Mazzoclo, 51, of Trumbull, told police that he was driving a 1997 Nissan pickup truck on Toddy Hill Road at 1:30 pm on September 12 when he took his eyes away from the road briefly to look down. When he looked up, he saw that a 1993 Chevrolet pickup driven by James Lewis, 52, of Mt Nebo Road, had stopped to turn left into a driveway. Mazzoclo was not able to stop; his vehicle hit the rear of the other pickup. Both vehicles were damaged. Police issued Mazzoclo a written warning for following too closely.

Rear Ender

Jeffery R. Levasseur, 16, of 2 Elana Lane, was driving a 1992 Mazda Protégé with two passengers on Church Hill Road at 2:54 pm on September 12 when the traffic slowed and his vehicle struck the rear of a 2001 Buick Regal driven by Alice A. Chrusciel, 73, of 3 Palestine Road. Levasseur was given a written warning for following too closely. There were no injuries.

Off The Road

Christina A. Robbe, 19, of Redding was driving a 1990 Toyota Camry on Hopewell Road at 8:02 am on September 11 when she moved to the far right of the eastbound lane to allow a vehicle traveling westbound to pass more easily. Robbe’s vehicle went off the road onto the shoulder and then struck several large rocks, blowing out a tire and sustaining damage on the front right side and undercarriage. She was not injured.

Mile Hill Road Crash

Maryhelen Burke, 38, of Portsmouth, N.H., was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla on Mile Hill Road at 8:19 am on September 14 when her vehicle began to slide on the pavement. The car crossed the westbound lane, spun and crossed back to the eastbound lane where it struck the guardrail on the shoulder, then spun back the westbound shoulder. The vehicle sustained heavy damage to the front and rear ends and had to be towed to a garage. Burke refused medical attention. She was given a written warning for failure to drive right.

 

Two-Car Crash

June M. Stadler, 59, of 31 Taunton lane, was driving on Main Street at West Street at 7:08 pm on September 13 when a vehicle in front of her, driven by Steven M. McFarland, 17, of New Milford, with three passengers, slowed to turn right into a parking area. At the same time, Stadler attempted to pass the vehicle on the right side and two collided, according to police. There were no injuries. Stadler was verbally warned for making an improper turn.

Queen Street Mishap

Police said Maria M. Bowen, 43, of 2-A Honey Lane, was driving a 1998 Ford Windstar on Queen Street and made a right turn into the driveway of the shopping center near Fleet Bank when the 1995 Buick Skylark in front of her also turned in. The Skylark was driven by Marguerite Eldridge of 20 Sunnyview Terrace. The two vehicles collided. Police gave Bowen written warning for passing on the right and Eldridge a written warning for failure to signal. There were no injuries, according to police.

Hit Stop Sign

Patricia E. Schultz, 55, of 6 Paugussett Road, was driving on High Bridge Road at New Lebbon Road at 10:15 am on September 12 when her 1988 Buick Lesabre struck a stop sign and continued on across High Bridge where it struck a tree. Schultz told police that she had a problem with the handicap equipment that had been installed on the vehicle, and was unable to stop. She was given a verbal warning for a stop sign violation. The vehicle was towed because of front-end damage.

Fender-Bender

Two vehicles collided on Main Street near the General Store on September 15 at 6:59 am when they attempted to back out of parking spaces at the same time. The vehicles were driven by Christopher Breault, 32, of 13 Washington Avenue, and Jody A. Haliskoe, 45, of 10 Jordan Hill Road. There were no injuries.

Bracelet Found

A gold bracelet was found at the Ice Cream Shop and turned into the police department. The owner should contact the police department to identify and claim it.

Windshield Broken

State Police say a Pennsylvania resident was driving on I-84 westbound between Exits 11 and 10 when an unknown object struck and broke his windshield. The object was not recovered. There were no witnesses and traffic was light. Police speculate that the object may have been thrown from an overpass just west of Exit 11.

Hit The Guardrail

Roshan Jhunta, 25, of Monroe, was charged with failure to drive right after 1990 Nissan 3002X struck 50 feet of guardrail on Toddy Hill Road at 6:10 am on September 14. Jhunta told police he swerved to avoid a southbound vehicle.

Near The Diner

Walter S. Gallagher, Jr, 40, of 5 Owl Ridge Lane, was driving a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country minivan on Church Hill Road at 8:50 pm on September 15 when he turned to drive into the Blue Colony Diner. His vehicle struck a 1998 Hyundai Allant driven by Therese Stants, 20, of Bethel, who was in the right turn only lane. Gallagher was given a written warning for making an unsafe lane change.

Calculator Stolen

A graphic calculator valued at approximately $100 was reported stolen from a student’s book bag in the gym at Newtown High School at noon on September 15. Police are investigating the theft.

Hit Posts, Tree

Walter Moradel, 34, of Bethel, was southbound on Pond Brook Road at 8:56 am on September 7 when he braked on a curve. His vehicle crossed the centerline, went into the northbound lane, and struck eight wooden posts and a tree, according to police. Moradel was cited for failure to drive right. He complained of shoulder and neck pain and was transported to New Milford Hospital.

Unsafe Backing

Stephanie Leclercq, 17, Danbury, was eastbound on Plum Trees Road at 4:42 pm on September 16 when she attempted to turn around because she was lost, police said. When she backed up, her car went down an embankment and got stuck. She was not injured. Police issued a written warning for unsafe backing.
