River Rocks Hike Over Two Watersheds

Norwalk River Watershed Association invites the public join members on Saturday, October 4, from 1 to 4 pm, for a moderately strenuous hike of approximately five to six miles. The trek will start within the Redding Scott/Rock Lot Preserve, enter the Saugatuck Watershed, meander through dramatic Topstone Park, cross the watershed divide, and end beside the Norwalk River at Route 7 in Ridgefield.

The hike will be led by two Norwalk River Watershed Association board members: Jere Ross, a member of Redding Conservation Commission/Inland Wetlands Board, and Lillian Willis, a member of Ridgefield Planning & Zoning/Inland Wetlands Board.

The program will feature fields, deciduous forests in autumn splendor, and imposing cliffs and rock formations. The upland open spaces, owned by the Town of Redding and Redding Land Trust, offer a glimpse of Long Island Sound from two different high points in clear weather.

Hikers should park at the River Study Site at the northeast corner of the intersection of Route 7 and Simpaug Turnpike, opposite Walpole Woodworkers in Ridgefield. Hikers will then carpool to the start in Redding. Participants should wear hiking shoes and bring water and a snack.

The hike is free, but registration is required. Interested participants should call Mr Ross (938-2650) to make a reservation or to receive further directions.
