Marion Hammer
Marion Goodwin Hammer, 79, of Torrington, died September 14 at the home of her daughter, Mariann Adams, in Newtown, with whom she lived after being taken ill.
She was the widow of George Hammer. Born July 4, 1924, in Avon, daughter of the late Aden and Daisy Twining Goodwin, Mrs Hammer moved to Torringford at the age of 4.
She was known for her dedication and multiple levels of service within the United Congregational Church (formerly the Torringford Congregational Church), including her position as financial treasurer, which she held since 1970. She was also a member of the Torrington Volunteer Fire Department Womenâs Auxiliary and the Torringford Grange. She joined the local 4-H Club and, in 1940, was honored with an appointment to the National Club Congress in Chicago. She was a graduate of Torrington High School.
In addition to her daughter, she leaves behind three sons, Leonard Hammer of Torrington, Robert Hammer of Ivoryton, and George Hammer III of Montgomery, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and three sisters, Harriet Ruwet, Myrtle Dobos, and Lucy Begey, all of Torrington.
Funeral services were held at the United Congregational Church. Burial followed in Torringford Cemetery. The Driscoll Mortuary, 138 Migeon Avenue, Torrington, was in charge of arrangements.
