Childrenâs Programs
*The All-Around Joy Of Ice Cream: Leslie Troy will return on Saturday, September 27, with âI Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream!â a fun-filled, two-hour workshop that will explore the literature, poetry, science, math and geography of one of our favorite foods: ice cream. The workshop will run from 12:30 to 2:30 and is for children ages 7-10. Space is limited to 15.
A $10 materials fee is due upon registration. For more information call the libraryâs childrenâs department, 426-3851.
*Drama Workshop: Profesional actress Leland Kellogg will offer an extended drama workshop for ages 7-10 Saturday mornings beginning October 4 and ending on December 20 with a live performance. Sessions will run from 10 am to noon each week, and class size is limited to 15 participants.
Ms Kellogg and the class will decide from a variety of performance options depending on the composition of the group. A fee of $75 is due upon registration to reserve your space. Sign up in the childrenâs department by October 3.
*Magic School Bus Team Returning: Illustrator Bruce Degen and author Joanna Cole will be at the library, so mark your calendars. Mr Degen and Mrs Cole will be rolling into the library on Sunday, October 5, at 1 pm, to talk about their most recent collaboration:Â Ms Frizzleâ Adventures: Medieval Castle.
Children ages 5 and up will enjoy hearing the team talk about the research that went into the writing and illustrations for this whimsical look at life in a medieval castle. After the slide presentation, the duo will be available to sign copies of their book. If you cannot attend on October 5, you can still purchase a copy of Medieval Castle in advance at the childrenâs desk and we will make sure your book is still signed and returned after the program.

*Art Exhibits: Watercolors and pencil drawings by Joyce Pedersen and Marilyn White are on display in the libraryâs lower meeting room through September 30 during regular library hours.
Also, The Charter Oak Chapter of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration has a display of membersâ work throughout the library. This unique artwork of country painting on metal, wood, and a variety of other mediums can be viewed throughout the library.

*Free Blood Pressure Screening: Ashlar of Newtown will return to the library to offer this monthâs free blood pressure screenings on Wednesday, September 24. The nurse will be here between 10 am and noon. No appointment is necessary. Just drop in.
*Rubber Stamping Class: Try a new craft this fall. On Wednesday, September 24, at 7 pm, Barbara Shohet of Newtown will teach the finer points of rubber stamping. Examples of the projects are on display at the library. Youâll be amazed at what you can do! Class size is limited to 15 and a $10 supplies fee will be charged. Please sign up by calling the library.
*The Master Forger: On Thursday, September 25, at 7:30 pm, Ivan MacDonald will talk about the most sensational forgery case in art history. Come learn about infamous artist Han van Meegeren, who fooled the experts and taught them a very important lesson in the greatest art scandal of the 20th Century. Reservations are requested.
*Broadway and Beyond: On Friday, October 3, at 7 pm, actress Carole Scweid will give us the inside story on the historic hit Oklahoma! and bring the world of choreographer Agnes deMille back to life in an extraordinary performance presentation which includes song and dance.
This promises to be a fun evening celebrating The Great White Way. Refreshments will be served and seating is limited so please call the library today to reserve your place.
*Interviewing to Get Results: Wayne Szmyt will give a talk at the library on Tuesday, October 7, at 7 pm, on âInterviewing To Get Results.â Participants will learn interviewing strategies that will help them articulate who they are and what they are all about during an interactive workshop. Practice different interview styles through role play and get constructive feedback on whatâs being done right and how to improve.
Mr Szymtâs talk is free, but reservations are requested.
*Book Talks: Itâs always interesting to discuss a book with a group, so come join one of the libraryâs ongoing book groups for some great conversation and lively discussion. New members are always welcome. Groups will be discussing a variety of great books in October including Wait Til Next Year by Doris Kearns Goodwin on Monday, October 7, at 1 pm; Anilâs Ghost by Michael Ondaatje on Monday, October 13, at 1 pm; and Atonement by Ian McEwan on Thursday, October 16, at 7:30 pm.
*Entertainment Books Are Here: The 2004 Entertainment Books, filled with discount coupons for area attractions, restaurants, etc, have arrived and are available for $22. You may also order books for other areas of the country. A great gift idea!
*PTA Activity Calendar: The 2003-004 PTA Activity calendar is on sale at the library for $10. Full of school holidays, the half-day schedule, and many other important community events to keep in mind during the school year, these calendars are selling quickly.
