The Career Center at Newtown High School presents the following list of national scholarships currently available for college-bound students. Please note that some of these scholarships request money to be sent with the scholarship application.
The Career Center automatically advertises all scholarships received in the mail. To verify the legitimacy of the scholarship, the Career Center strongly suggests that potential applicants contact the FTC Consumer Response Center at 877-382-4357, www.ftc.gov., the National Fraud Information Center at 800-876-7060, www.fraud.org, or the Better Business Bureau at 703-276-0100, www.bbb.org.
Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS) â The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts provides the opportunity for 17- and 18-year-old artists to qualify to participate in the ARTS week. This program is available to artists developing their careers in dance, jazz, music, theater, voice, writing, visual arts, photography, film, and video. Students have the chance to earn cash awards of up to $3,000 each. Students selected for the Music for Youth Award will receive $25,000. There is a fee to apply. The deadline for applications is October 1. Students are to mail applications directly to ARTS.
Artists in Christian Testimony â Offers $50,000 in prizes, which includes a single song-publishing contract for the grand prize-winning song. Entry forms can be obtained by calling 615-345-2500. Entries are to be mailed directly to the organization and must be received by October 24.
Coca-Cola Scholarship Foundations â All students must apply online at www.coca-cola-colascholars.org. This award recognizes outstanding high school seniors who balance extracurricular activities with strong academic performance. Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree at an accredited US postsecondary institution. Applications must be received before midnight on October 31.
Prudential Spirit of Community Awards/National Association of Secondary School Principals â All high school students who have outstanding involvement in a volunteer community service activity performance at least in part after September 1, 2002, are encouraged to apply. Newtown High School will select one student to progress to state level judging. Only the student to continue on in this competition will be notified before November 7. The top volunteer in each state will receive $1,000, a trip to Washington, D.C., and a silver medallion. Once in Washington, D.C., the top ten will win an additional $5,000. Applications must be returned to the Career Center by October 31.
Principals Leadership Award â Only one leadership-demonstrating Newtown High School senior in the top 20 percent of their class will be awarded one of 150 scholarships of $1,000 each. Applications and instructions are in the Career Center. All entries must be returned by November 27.
UConn Nutmeg Scholarship ââ Applicants must be a state resident and US citizen or permanent resident alien, enrolled in a Connecticut secondary school system, enroll at UConn by 2004, be in the top ten percent of their class, been nominated a National Merit Semifinalist, National Achievement Finalist, or National Hispanic Recognition Finalist or be nominated by their high school guidance counselor. If chosen, the UConn-bound student will have their tuition, fees, room and board costs covered for their first year on campus. Prospective applicants should contact the Career Center for more information. Applications must be received by November 1.
UConn Day of Pride Scholarship â The purpose of this scholarship is to attract and enroll students traditionally underrepresented and to promote cultural diversity in the university community. The scholarship is offered on a competitive basis to 15 outstanding Connecticut high school seniors. If chosen, the UConn-bound student will have their tuition, fees, room and board costs covered for their first year on campus. Applicants must be a state resident and US citizen or permanent resident alien, expected to graduate at a Connecticut secondary school system, enroll at UConn by 2004, be in the top 15 percent of their class, and demonstrate involvement in leadership activities through high school and/or their community.
