Lupus Walk-A-Thon Set For October 15

WEST HARTFORD — On Sunday, October 15, 2000 hundreds will join Cory Meyers, co-host of Country 92.5’s Morning Crew, as they walk for a cure for Lupus. This is the thirteenth year that the walkers have used the walk to raise funds for this mysterious disease. Sponsored walkers will go from one to six miles around West Hartford Center, ending with a celebration at Town Hall. Registration for the Walk-A-Thon will begin at noon and the walkers will leave from Town Hall at 1:00 pm. The event will be held rain or shine.

Cory Meyers will lead the walkers and host the celebration at the end of the event. It will include entertainment by Sparkle and Tiny Bubbles the clowns, prize drawings, face painting, free balloons, entertainment, refreshments, and music.

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that mainly strikes women during their childbearing years. It causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys. The cause in unknown and currently there is no cure.

The Walk-A-Thon is sponsored by the Lupus Foundation of America, Connecticut Chapter, Inc. All funds will be used locally to provide support services to lupus patients and their families, public education, and funding for lupus research.

There are three walking routes: The Butterfly Stroll, a one-mile wheelchair and stroller accessible trip; the three-mile Lupus Stride; and the six-mile Lupus Road.

Prizes will be given to the top fundraisers. For those raising $200 to $2,500 there will be gift certificates to Bob’s Stores. There will also be a raffle with the top prize being a five-day/four night vacation at the Sonesta Beach Spa and Resort Hotel in Bermuda as well as round-trip airfare, breakfast, and dinner each day. There will also be a Corporate Team Prize and a Family Team Prize.
