The Top of the Mountain
The Farmers’ Market at Fairfield Hills continues every Tuesday, from 2 to 6 pm, through October 23 — rain or shine. Jim Shortt of Shortt’s Farm and Garden reminded me that this is prime time at markets. Late summer and fall produce is abundant now — squashes of all kinds, late summer tomatoes and lettuce, spinach, kale, and root vegetables are at the peak of harvest. You’ll find some savory and fiery hot sauces, fresh mozzarella, pesto, and breads, natural meats, and more at this local market, in addition to the bounty of produce. Seems to me this would be a good way to while away some of the hours spent watching soccer practices at Fairfield Hills, or a nice diversion if you are biking, hiking, or walking your pooch on a Tuesday afternoon. The Farmers’ Market at Fairfield Hills is located on the piece of property just before the Municipal Center — look for the white picket fence. Bon Appetit!
I heard it through the grapevine… Joan Crick celebrated birthday number 83, September 15. In case you aren’t sure who Joan is, she’s the one in all the sequins riding with the Newtown Country Club in this year’s Labor Day Parade. Joan was the first woman president of the Golf Club, by the way, and swings a mean golf club, I’m told. (But only at golf balls.) Happy belated birthday!
Laurie Kilchevsky says her dad, Meyer Rothstein, of Merrick, L.I., has been reading The Newtown Bee for 40 or 50 years, and the paper is a longtime tradition for her, as well. “My dad and mother are still in the same house I grew up in, in Merrick, L.I., and I remember The Bee coming to our house every week, as a little girl, and going to the auctions with my dad,” says Laurie. Ironically, she says, she ended up living in Newtown because of her husband’s job. “I read The Bee as a kid, and now I try to go visit my dad every week and read it to him. It’s kind of come full circle.” Maybe reading The Bee has kept her dad youthful, because Laurie tells me that Mr Rothstein celebrated his 100th birthday, August 9. It’s another belated wish, but Happy Birthday, Mr Rothstein! Best wishes, and we hope you and your family have many more happy years of reading The Bee.
Newtown schools will be closed this coming Wednesday, September 23, which is the Jewish high holiday of Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, bringing reconciliation between people, and between people and the Higher Power.
Tickets are available for the very special “Love Wins! A Celebration of Food and Music to Benefit the Ana Grace Project and The Ana Grace Márquez-Greene Scholarship Fund at WCSU.” The public event takes place Saturday, October 3, beginning at 7 pm, in the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) on the Western Connecticut State University Westside campus, Danbury. Among the celebrities is French chef Jacques Pépin, and vocalist Kurt Elling will lend his Grammy-winning voice to the event, along with pianist Kenny Barron, bassist John Patitucci, drummer Lewis Nash, and WCSU Coordinator of Jazz Studies Jimmy Greene on saxophone. The Ana Grace Project was created in the aftermath of 12/14, with a mission is to “promote love, community and connection for every child and family.” Ana Grace was the beloved daughter of Jimmy Greene and Nelba Márquez-Greene, and younger sister of devoted brother, Isaiah. For tickets ($35) and information visit www.eventbrite.com/o/visual-and-performing-arts-center-at-western-connecticut-state-university-6275173871.
Just a reminder… The Bee loves the Instagram submissions at #viewfromnewtown. It’s great to see everyone’s different vantage points, from dawn to dusk, inside and outside the many great places about town. Please make sure that any photograph posted to #viewfromnewtown is appropriate for anyone to see, though, and will not be offensive. There is so much beauty in the everyday things; there is no need to inject any negativity.
Look out houseflies. Our assistant editor at The Bee, Shannon, is on a rampage. Just this week she unpacked the granddaddy of all flyswatters, special ordered to take out any buzzing pest who gets in her way. And, I’m told, this swatter is powerful enough to deliver a death blow to a pest as big as “a small mouse.” Ouch. Well, looks like my work here is done.
I may have a new job, though, as a seeing eye cat. My good friend, Rosé, one of our office dogs, has been diagnosed with glaucoma. It could lead to a loss of eyesight, but she can count on me to guide her to her favorite spot on the couch. Since dogs “see” as much with their noses as their eyes, don’t think Rosé won’t be giving you a welcoming “Woof, woof, woof!” when you stop by The Bee.
If you plan quickly, you can make it to the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft, N.J., in time for the opening reception for Newtown artist Susan McLaughlin’s exhibit, “Portraits.” The reception take place Friday, September 18, from 6 to 8 pm, at the museum, located at 765 Newman Springs Road.
It’s congratulations times two to the fire marshal’s office secretary Nancy Schreiner and her husband, John. The Schreiners became grandparents twice in one day, on September 3, when the wife of John’s oldest son Jeff, Laura, gave birth to a little girl, Kadel Quinn Schreiner, at 3:59 pm, and again at 4:10 pm EDT, when Jessica, the wife of Nancy’s youngest son, Robert Kokoski, gave birth to Parker James Kokoski. “The two dads were text messaging each other all day; the baby race was on,” Nancy tells me. Of course, since Robert and Jessica live in the part of Florida that is actually Central Time, Parker’s birth certificate will read 3:10 pm. Which baby was born first may be an ongoing argument, Nancy joked. The Schreiners had plans to jet off to Florida on Thursday to meet Parker, but have had many opportunities already to spend time with little Kadel. She joins an older brother, James, who is 4 years old, said the proud Grandma. James, she said, had great advice for her as he introduced his new sister: “You have to talk very softly. She only has little ears.”
I also have fairly little ears, but I’ll have both to the ground, as usual, for any news worthy of this column. Be sure next week to… Read me again.
