Hawk Spikers Get Season Underway
Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team posted a record of 2-2 through its first four matches of the season.
The new-look Nighthawks, who graduated a bulk of their regulars last year, opened the season with a tough test against Woodstock Academy on September 10, and fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 26-24). Kyle Dandrea had six kills and nine digs, and Tonya Tucker had three service aces to go along with nine digs.
Newtown got into the win column the next day with a 3-1 (25-4, 25-10, 22-25, 25-14) victory at New Fairfield in the team’s first South-West Conference match of the year. Dandrea had 16 kills and seven digs; Molly McCoy had ten aces, three kills, and 27 assists; Jamie Calandro added four kills, five digs, and three aces; Tonya Tucker contributed five aces and three digs; and Clara Whaley added eight kills.
The Nighthawks lost a hard-fought contest against rival Joel Barlow in Redding on September 15, falling 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11). Dandrea had ten kills and 16 digs; Calandro recorded nine kills and seven digs; and Tucker chipped in with six aces and five digs.
Newtown visited Bunnell of Stratford on September 17 and won 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) as Dandrea had 12 kills, seven aces, and five digs; Calandro had had seven kills and seven digs; and Zoe Beals added six aces.
Newtown will be home for two straight matches, entertaining Bethel at 5 pm on Friday, September 19, and New Milford at 6:30 pm on Monday, September 22.
