Suspended License
Newtown Police say that at 2:39 pm on September 10, Katie Miranti, 20, of Great Quarter Road in Sandy Hook was pulled over by officers for traveling too fast in the area of 12 Meadow Brook Road. Upon further investigation it was determined that the operatorâs license was suspended. Miranti was arrested and charged with the moving violation and operating under suspension. She was later released on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court September 24.
Outstanding
Warrant
On September 10 at 2:55 pm, police said Melissa Soden, 25, of Easton Avenue in Waterbury turned herself in to Newtown Police after learning they had a warrant for her arrest. The warrant was issued for a disorderly conduct charge. After processing, Soden was released on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court September 23.
Wrong Right Turn
After Newtown Police reportedly observed a vehicle making an illegal right turn from South Main Street to Wasserman Way at 2:15 pm on September 11, officers pulled the driver over to investigate. At that time it was determined that Frederick Weller, 33, of 30 Capital Drive in Sandy Hook was operating under suspension. Weller was arrested and subsequently released after posting a $100 cash bond pending a September 25 court date in Danbury.
Unwanted Party
Police responded to the Big Y store on Queen Street at 9:34 pm September 12, after learning a 15-year-old male who was previously warned verbally and in writing that he was not allowed on the private property. The juvenile, whose name cannot be released, was found and arrested for Criminal Trespass in the 1st degree and processed for a Juvenile Court appearance on September 21 to answer to the charge.
Remote Starter Mishap?
Police say a remote starter that may have been accidentally activated, may be to blame for a minor collision between a 1995 BMW sedan and the owners garage on the afternoon of September 13. Officers responded to 223 Sugar Street after being contacted about the incident. Upon arrival, the vehicleâs owner, John Seidel, of that same address said he was inside the home when he heard a collision. He came outside to find the vehicle, which was in gear, had collided with his garage causing minor damage to both the residence and the car. The owner reportedly told police that there was a remote car starter installed, but he never used it. No injuries were reported and no action was taken.
Warrant On DUI
Police say at 11:10 am on September 14, Jason Cordova, 28, of Wesly Street in Ansonia turned himself in after learning of an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He was charged with failure to drive right on a curve, reckless driving, and operating under the influence. The warrant was issued following a traffic collision in Newtown on June 20 of this year. Cordova was subsequently released on a $500 cash bond pending a September 29 court appearance.
Found Trimmer
On September 1, police located an Echo brand string trimmer behind the Peopleâs United Bank branch on Queen Street. Anyone missing this item should contact Officer Silver at the Newtown Police Department.
Removed Sign
Newtown Police reported that sometime between 1 pm on August 31, and 12:30 am on September 8, someone removed without permission, a Coldwell Banker real estate sign from a property at 73 Walnut Tree Hill Road, as well as damaging a brochure box at that address. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newtown Police department.
Threat Against Judge
On September 14 at 5:15 pm State Police were called to the Garner correctional facility after staff there alleged an inmate made a possible threatening statement about a probate judge. According to the report, Robert Killian, 62, stated during a medical screening that he was âgoing to have to kill the judge and wished he would get the electric chair.â The unidentified male judge in question was notified of the incident and stated he did not feel the threat was imminent, and suggested the incident may have come from the handling of a probate case. The case remains under investigation until it is determined Killian has the mental capacity necessary to commit a crime.
Honda Into Guardrail
At 9:24 pm on September 10, State Police responded to a report of a collision on Interstate 84 eastbound near Exit 10 in Newtown. According to the report, John Sestilli, 41, of Naugatuck was operating a commercial Peterbilt truck and trailer owned by Connecticut Cartage Company of Wolcott, when he attempted to merge onto the highway from the on ramp making contact with a 1998 Honda Accord being operated by Cheshire resident. The contact caused the Honda to spin around where it struck the left shoulder guardrail. There were no injuries but the Honda was towed from the scene. There were no charges to either driver indicated on the report.
Hit Reflector Post
State Police responded to the area of I-84 westbound in Newtown after a report of a traffic collision. Upon locating the incident, police discovered that Judith Turner, 79, of Bridgton, Maine had attempted to pull off the right shoulder when the 2002 Mercedes Benz she was operating with one passenger struck a reflector post causing damage to the front grill. The vehicle was towed from the scene, and no charges were reported.
Written Warning
On September 11 at 10:57 am, State Police responded to the area of Exit 11 westbound after a report of a collision. After investigating, police reported that Kyle Pratt, 20, of Umpawaug Road in Redding was operating a 1994 Mercury Cougar when he lost control negotiating a curve and struck a traffic sign on the left shoulder. The driver was subsequently issued a written warning for travelling too fast for conditions.
Down Embankment
State Police were called to the area of Exit 10 off I-84 at 1:35 am on September 12, after a report of a vehicle collision. Upon arrival police report encountering a 2000 Hyundai Elantra down an embankment off the Exit 10 ramp. After investigating it was determined that the driver, Richard Moody, 24, of Governorâs Lane in Bethel had lost control of the vehicle when attempting to exit the highway, struck a metal guide wire and drove down the embankment. Moody was not injured, and was issued an infraction for travelling too fast for conditions. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
Brake And Spin
According to State Police, on September 13 at 10:05 pm, Finton Woods, 45, of West Hartford was operating a 2003 Ford Focus westbound on I-84 when he attempted to brake suddenly causing the car to spin around and strike a center guardrail causing damage sufficient to require towing from the scene. No injuries were involved and no other vehicles were involved. No charges were reported.
Church Hill Collision
Newtown Police report that a three car collision on Church Hill Road at 4:08 pm on September 16 resulted in minor damage to all three vehicles involved, and one driver being charged with an infraction. According to the report, Katherine Smith-Bloxsom, 26, of Mackenzie Circle was exiting the parking area at 62 Church Hill Road in a 2003 Nissan Altima when she was struck by a 2004 Honda Pilot being operated by Po Murray, 42, of Charter Ridge Drive who was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road. The collision then caused the Nissan to collide with a third vehicle, a 2005 Ford Escape being driven by Cathy Conway, 57, who was stopped for traffic at an adjacent intersection. No injuries were reported, and after an investigation, police cited Ms Smith-Bloxsom with failure to grant the right of way.
Under The Influence
On September 15 at 11:39 pm, Newtown Police responded to a report of a vehicle driving erratically on South Main Street. Upon identifying the vehicle police investigated and determined the driver, Kamil Zawisza, 23, of Cindy Circle in Milford was operating under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. He was subsequently arrested on that charge, as well as being cited for operating with tinted or darkened windows without the proper permit sticker, and operating with an obscured registration marker. Zawisza posted a $100 cash bond and was later released with an October 1 court date.
Multiple Vehicle
Charges
During routine patrol at 8:45 am on September 16, a Newtown officer observed Kimberly Marshall, 56, of Brookbend Road in Fairfield operating her vehicle on Church Hill Road while talking on a hand-held cell phone. After pulling her over, officers discovered her vehicle had not been registered for more than a year, and that Marshallâs license was suspended. She was arrested and charged with the cell phone and motor vehicle violations, as well as failure to surrender her license upon its suspension. She was released on a written promise to appear in Danbury Court on September 30.
Juvenile Domestic Matter
Newtown Police were called to a Philo Curtis Road home at 4:20 pm on September 16, after a report of a domestic incident where a juvenile had struck his father numerous times. Police located the accused hiding in the home, after which he reportedly resisted arrest. The individual was transported to police headquarters and was charged with interfering with an officer and breach of peace, and was released on a promise to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court on September 21.
Apparent Brake
Failure
At 11:56 am on September 15, Newtown Police responded to the area of 25 Main Street and discovered that a parked 1994 Saab 900 had rolled into the rear bumper of a parked 2000 Ford sedan. While the operator of the offending vehicle stated that the parking brake was set, police issued the individual an infraction for operating with an ineffective braking system.
Minor T-Bone
Newtown Police were called to the intersection of Main Street and School House Hill Road at 6:17 pm on September 11 after a report of a minor collision. Upon investigation it was determined that Wayne Turk, 53, of Chestnut Ridge Road in Armonk, N.Y., who was operating a 2008 Mazda CX9, attempted to turn from Main Street onto the side street. He collided with the passenger door of a 1991 Toyota being operated by Timothy Geary, 48, of Southbury, who was traveling northbound on Main Street. There were no injuries reported and Turk was given a verbal warning for failure to grant the right of way.
Rear Ender
Police reported on September 14 at about 2:04 pm, Brian Cantore, 18, of Horseshoe Ridge in Sandy Hook was operating a 2005 Subaru Impreza on Berkshire Road when he made minor contact with the back of a 2009 Toyota 4X4 being operated by Shannon Zamary, 17, of Concord Ridge, who had slowed for traffic. No injuries were reported, and after a brief investigation, Cantore was issued a written warning for following to closely.
