*PQI MEETING: In our effort to create quality programs responsive to community needs, Newtown Youth & Family Services invites all interested members of the community to the monthly PQI meetings.

The next meeting will be Thursday, September 24, from 10 to 11 am.

*Family Fun Night will return on Friday, September 25, at Reed Intermediate School, from 6 to 8 pm.

Admission is $10 per family of four; $3 each additional person.

This event is hosted by The Newtown Parent Connection and Newtown Youth & Family Services together with the Newtown Prevention Council.

Tickets are available at NYFS and Dr. Baum’s Office. Please note, no tickets will be sold at the door.

Family Programs & Events

Parent Education Program (PEP): Putting Children First is a State of Connecticut program required as a prerequisite to granting a divorce.

Sessions are designed to help families cope with the effects of divorce on children. Call Sheila at NYFS for more information including the schedule.

Youth Programs & Activities

*Job Bank is now taking applications from qualified 13-17-year-olds who want employment babysitting, pet sitting or performing other household chores.

Call Monday through Thursday between 3 and 5 pm for an application.

*Rock’ N Roll Middle School meets Wednesdays from 2:30 until 5 PM.

Support Groups

*Alateen meetings are Tuesdays from 7 to 9 pm. This program is for youth affected by somebody else’s alcoholism.

At meetings members share their personal experiences, and learn to find personal happiness, whether or not the alcoholic in their lives is still drinking.

*Autism Group, for parents of children with special needs, meets at 7 pm the first Thursday of every month. Call Wendy Suckow, 364-1163, for more information.

*Children of Divorce: This is a special group to help your child heal from the pain caused by a separation or divorce.

Meetings are Thursday nights from 5 to 6 pm. Children ages 10-14 are meeting now, weekly until October 22. Ages 5-9 will begin meeting on October 29 and will have opportunities each week until December 10.

*LD Support Group is for parents of children with learning disabilities. The focus is on assisting parents in finding the resources they need to help their children become successful.

The group meets on the second Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 pm. Call Suzanne at 270-9869 for additional information.

*Sib shop: This program acknowledges that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for many, somewhere in-between.

Meetings are Wednesday nights from 5 to 6 pm. Sessions for ages 10-14 have started and will continue weekly until October 21. Meetings fro ages 5-9 will run October 28 to December 9.
