Newtown Health and Public Safety Fair On Saturday

The Newtown Health and Public Safety Fair to be held on Saturday, September 22 at the Middle School Gym from 10 am to 2 pm promises to be bigger and better than ever before, according to co-chairperson Mae Schmidle.

The theme of this year’s fair is “Got Health” and the poster contest reflects how young people get health. The Newtown Woman’s Club is sponsoring the poster contests and the judges are Marcia Cavanaugh, Kay Ozanne, Barbara Ditko and Ruth Newquist. There will be three prizes for the poster contest and the grand winners will be announced at noon on Saturday, the day of the fair.

The co-chairmen of the Health and Safety Fair with Mrs Schmidle are Dr Della Schmid and Mark Cooper. The sponsors of the fair are the American Red Cross, Ashlar of Newtown, Colonial Chiropractic Centre, the Newtown Health District, the Newtown VNA, the Newtown Woman’s Club and The Newtown Bee, the Newtown Ambulance Corps and Dr Charles Ray.

“The Paproski family will be there featuring Newtown’s pride and joy bovines, mother and baby, better known as cows to us, and those attending the fair will have the opportunity to visit a miniature farm set up on the front lawn of the middle school,” Mrs Schmidle said. “Marcus Dairy milk and fruit juice products will also be available.”

Connecticut Tick Control will provide information on Lyme Disease prevention services; Housatonic Resource Recovery Authority will bring its mobile classroom, the “Earth to Kids” Environmental Educational Van; the Lions Club of Newtown will provide a glaucoma screening; Hilda DeLucia of Ashlar will provide information on healthy aging and volunteer opportunities; a chiropractor will provide spinal screening including scoliosis screening; the Newtown Ambulance Association will demonstrate ambulance services and how they are used; Natalie Dos Santos of the American Red Cross Western Connecticut Chapter will do blood pressure screening, first aid and CPR education, and provide information on disaster services and Lifeline.

There will be blood sugar screening and blood pressure screening by the Bethel Visiting Nurse Association. Wendy VonDer Linn of Fitness by Phone will provide information weight loss and health via phone coaching; Dr Corey Patterson of Dental Associates will bring a slide show; Dr Henry Gellert will have information on orthodontics and dental health; Dr William Notaro will do  skin cancer screenings and provide prevention information. The Newtown Health District will offer cholesterol screenings.

AIDS education will be provided by Jane Todorski of Newtown Youth Services; Lyme Disease information by Pat Barlett, Maggie Shaw, the Greater Danbury Lyme Disease Support Group. Other exhibitors include the LaLeche League; bike safety and helmet use from the Chamber of Commerce; the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; pediatric medicine and surgery information from Dr Joel Segalman; Ricci’s Salon & Spa – massage therapy and health history; health and wellness by Larry Behr – Magnetic and Farinfra – Red Energy products; DARE Program – Newtown Police Department, Joe Rios; The Family Counseling Center; Aqua Environmental Lab, Inc. – pure water information; martial arts demonstrations by Newtown Academy of Karate; Dr Curtis Beck – orthodontic treatment; John Dudley, DMD – dental health.

The St Rose Parish Nurse Ministry will bring the mannequin Choking Charlie to demonstrate how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver and also will have a color washing hand display; Newtown Health and Racquetball Club– techniques and health education; MNA Nutrition and Nutrition Education; Newtown Visiting Nurse Association – Home Helpers Information; Children’s Adventure Center – professional, safe daycare. David Snieckus of the Grain and Salt Society will provide information on CelticSea Salt.

The gymnasium will be filled with giveaways, balloons, free samples, trick or treat bags, free demonstrations and lots of excitement including the demonstration by the Life Star Helicopter.
