Information On Scholarships Available At NHS Career Center

The following scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School. Applications and/or more information are available there. Please note that these scholarships are not just for seniors — many are for underclassmen as well.

For a complete list of scholarships available, check the scholarship file in the Career Center. Call Mrs McEvoy at 426-1915 with questions.

Newman’s Own “Cookin’ Up a Better World” Community-Action Challenge – Paul Newman is at it again. The actor’s unique food company donates all profits after taxes to educational and charitable purposes. Now Newman’s Own hopes to challenge young people to come up with innovative ways to make a difference and the company will help make the idea a reality.

This is a group activity so students who are members of the Leadership Council, Leo Club, Honor Society, Charity Club, Drama Club, etc, or any group or class looking to help a good cause as well as their organization are invited to look into this program, which offers three $1,000 Grand Grants and nine second place $500 Perfect Recipe Grants.

Students working in groups must come up with creative ideas that could make a difference in their community. These ideas can be fundraising ideas, service ideas, or teamwork and spirit. They will be judged on creativity, practicality, potential impact, and presentation. The deadline is December 7.

The Barton L. Weller Scholarship – Ffor any senior attending Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton or Trumbull high schools on a full-time basis. The award is $12,000 and the student is required to complete a five-month original independent research or study project of your choice.

A two-page proposal outlining the proposed project must be postmarked by no later than midnight November 2.

Colonial Football Officials Association Scholarship – One scholarship is for a senior football player and one is for the deserving son or daughter of one of the CFOA members. The application deadline is Monday, November 19; absolutely no applications will be considered after this date. Awards will be presented at CFOA’s annual banquet on December 4.

The National Young Leaders Conference – Members of class of 2002 or 2003 who have demonstrated outstanding leadership potential and academic excellence, and would be interested in being nominated to participate in The National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C., should see Mrs McEvoy before October 1.

Nomination for this program does not obligate a student in any way. It merely provides them with information on the opportunity.
