MILFORD – Bolstered by the performances of freshmen Amy Robinson, (a double winner twice over), junior Melissa Rushefski (a double winner once), and sophomore Margaret Randall (a double winner once), the Newtown High School swim team opened up the 2001 season – and its first tri-meet schedule – with a split.

The ‘Hawks dropped a tough, 94-89, decision to New Fairfield that came down to the final event of the night – the 400-yard freestyle relay. The ‘Hawks led 85-84 at the time and needed to finish first to guarantee the win, but the Lady Rebels took the event by a comfortable, 17-second margin to grab the win.

The ‘Hawks, meanwhile, hammered Jonathan Law, 139-48.

Robinson – leading a crop of promising freshmen – was a double winner in both meets while Rushefski and Randall were double winners against Jonathan Law. Margaret Ashey, Caitlin Malloy and Sarah Hemingway were all winners against Law while Malloy had the only other first-place finish against New Fairfield.

Freshman diver Kim_Mayers won her first varsity meet, as well, with a strong performance that very nearly earned her a spot in the CIAC_state meet.

The swimmers – now 1-1 in the South-West Conference – were back in their own pool on Thursday for a tri-meet with New Milford and Bunnell and will host Stratford on Tuesday, September 25.
