Band Takes Fourth In Competition
On Saturday September 15, the Newtown High School Marching Band & Color Guard participated in their first competition of the season at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk. They finish fourth of 14 in Class V competition, behind Arlington, Norwalk, and Port Chester.
With a score of 58.60, NHS beat Stamford and Ramsey. The event marked opening night for the participating bands and the newly formed Musical Arts Conference (MCA), a coalition of music educators that implements the rules and procedures regarding competitions.
âWe lacked a little in musicality,â said Jason Hiruo, assistant director of the NHS Marching Band. âThe new organization [MAC] uses a specific scoring scale and a positive, constructive approach that is more student oriented. So we know what we need to work on for next week.â
Staff member Jon Grauer concurred, âYes, the entire staff is very pleased with the new organization.â
On Saturday, September 22, the NHS Marching Band will be competing at Bethel High. For more information check the MAC website at www.musicalartsconference.com
