NVCC, Hancock Hall To Offer Health Care Continuing Education Classes
DANBURY â Hancock Hall/Filosa Nursing Centers will host several continuing education programs for health care personnel beginning in September through November. Classes are being conducted by Naugatuck Valley Community Collegeâs Center for Nursing and Allied Health Continuing Education.
Beginning in October, a series for nurse aides, home health aides, and patient care technicians will be held beginning October 10 for four Tuesdays, from 6 to 9 pm. Topics include: Caring for Persons with Cognitive Disorders, Protect Yourself and Your Patients, How Do You Know When Your Patient Has A Problem, and Depression in the Elderly. Classes will be taught by a physical therapist, social worker, and registered nurses with expertise in the subject area. These programs can be used to meet mandatory In-Service hours.
Also in October, classes for rehabilitation care providers (physical therapists, occupational therapists, and physical and occupational therapy assistants) will focus on the use of Tai Chi and Chikung, two ancient Chinese arts, which have been found to be beneficial when working with patients in rehabilitation. These sessions will be held on two Thursday evenings, October 12 and October 19, from 7 to 9 pm. Louis Friedman, a physical therapist and orthopedic specialist who has also been a student of martial arts for several years, will teach the classes.
Beginning November 14, a three session series from 6 to 9 pm will focus on hospice care. The series is designed for health care providers who would like to improve their care to terminally ill clients in any setting. Pamela Duchaine, a registered nurse and hospice specialist who has worked in hospice care for 16 years, will teach the series.
Participants will be awarded certificates with contact hours for successful class completion. There are course fees for the programs, and a special discount is provided if there is registration for all sessions in a particular series. For registration information, or to register, call the Customer Service Center at the College, 203/575-8030 or 203/596-2142.
