FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN

St Rose Junior Youth Group Back-To-School Kickoff, 6-8 pm, St Rose Church and parish grounds, 46 Church Hill Road, open to all Newtown sixth through eighth graders, dunk tank and other events, light refreshments; 426-1014.

Annual Newtown Newcomers Club New Member Kick-Off, 7-9 pm, Edmond Town Hall Alexandria Room, 45 Main Street, open to new residents of Newtown (Sandy Hook, Hawleyville, etc), also recently engaged or married residents, new or expectant parents, anyone with recent lifestyle change, evening will offer club information and member networking, light refreshments; 270-8065.

Newtown United Methodist Church Fair, 10 am to 4 pm, church grounds, 92 Church Hill Road, free admission, baked goods, and grilled food, silent auction including artwork and theme baskets, children’s activities, games, moon walk, crafts, etc; 426-9998.

HRRA Recycling Day for old computer equipment, televisions, stereos, and VCRs; on Plumtrees Road opposite the Danbury Water Treatment Facility and just north of the Motor Vehicle Emissions Station, 11 am to 3 pm; also free tours of environmental educational van.

Sunday, September 24

Family Bikes, Boards, and Blades Day, noon to 3 pm, Fairfield Hills near former library parking lot, sponsored by Newtown Youth Services. Check-in noon to 2; four bike routes, beginner to advanced, area for rollerblading, skateboarding, and scooters; free food stops; registration $7 for adults and $5 for youths 13 and under; prizes for all plus raffle; bike safety check-in, youths 18 and under must wear bike/skate helmets; 270-4335.

Concert by The Broyhill Ensemble, 3 pm, Edmond Town Hall theatre, 45 Main Street, tickets $14, $12 seniors, students free when accompanied by ticket-holding adult, performance of stylistic and instrumental combinations is season-opener for Newtown Friends of Music-sponsored events, reception with performers follows; 426-6470.

The Victorian Lady at Booth Library, 7 pm, 25 Main Street, fun presentation by Kandie Carle concerning Victorian era fashion, society, leisure, and arts (approximately 90 minutes), light refreshments, suitable for all ages, sponsored by Newtown Historical Society; 426-5937.
