Diocese Builds Elderly Housing
BRIDGEPORT â Affordable housing for the elderly in Fairfield County will take a step forward with the construction of a new residence in the east side of Bridgeport by the Diocese of Bridgeport. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new âBishop Curtis Homes â East Bridgeportâ were held on Wednesday, September 20, opposite Blessed Sacrament Church, 275 Union Avenue.
The facility will be owned and administered by Augustana Homes, Inc., the division of the Diocese of Bridgeport that focuses on the development and operation of moderately-priced housing for the elderly within Fairfield County.
Funding for the $4.7 million residence is subsidized by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the City of Bridgeport. When completed in October 2001, the new residence will contain 48 one-bedroom units for persons 62 years or older.
Bishop Curtis Homes are named in memory of the Most Reverend Walter W. Curtis, Bishop of Bridgeport from 1961 to 1988, who died in 1997.
