Conference On Carpatho-Rusyns
Conference On Carpatho-Rusyns
BRIDGEPORT â One of Connecticutâs larger Slavic groups will be explored in detail at a day-long conference on October 21 being co-sponsored by New England Deanery of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church and the national Carpatho-Rusyn Society. The symposium will be by St John the Baptist Church on Mill Hill Avenue.
The full day conference will feature noted speakers addressing historical, genealogical, and cultural aspects of the Carpatho-Rusyns who settled in Connecticut.
Key research speaker will be Thomas Peters, a certified genealogist specializing in research in East European families, and especially the Rusyns. A resident of Clifton, N.J., Mr Peters will present detailed information for those with ancestors in the Carpathian Mountains to learn how to conduct research using both American and European sources.
A practical hands-on session will follow with members of Carpatho-Russian Society on hand to help people with certificate translations, date extraction, and addressing problems and snags individuals have encountered in their research.
In addition, a number of other speakers will provide a background information on the Rusyn Americans. Rusyn ethnic items and books will also be available for sale and a display of Rusyn costumes will be featured.
Cost of the conference is $30, which includes lunch. Registration is required by October 7. To register or for more information, contact any of the following: Eleanor Adzima, 203/377-7274; Ilona Decerbo, 203/261-4221; Ann Kisela, 203/375-4976.
