Basic Fitness Class Launches

Ashlar’s Learning Center

Ashlar of Newtown is launching its Learning Center with a fall lineup of classes designed to meet the educational needs of the community’s mature adults. From improving physical health to expanding horizons to include the cyber world, the Learning Center is dedicated to helping seniors live healthy, happy, and productive lives.

The fall course offerings begin with a Basic Fitness Exercise Class led by Maureen Munson-Bette, RPT, rehabilitation services manager at Ashlar of Newtown. The four-week course will help seniors to enhance muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility. Designed to introduce basic fitness guidelines, the class may be used as the first steps to becoming more physically active. Individual attention will help tailor the exercises to meet individual fitness levels. A physical therapist for over 25 years, Ms Munson-Bette has extensive experience in the acute, home, and long term care fields.

The class meets on Thursdays, beginning September 28, and again on October 5, 12, and 19, from 3 to 4 pm. Classes will take place in the Rehabilitation services Department, at Ashlar of Newtown, Toddy Hill Road, in Sandy Hook. The cost of the course is $29.

Other offerings include a nutrition course and computer course focused on searching the Internet for health information. “Eating Healthy to Stay Healthy: Pick, Plan, and Prepare” will be taught by nutrition consultant and herbalist Judith Dryer, MS. This two-part class will cover the basics of label reading to take the mystery out of the numbers. Classes will be held October 19 and 26, from 10 am to noon.

The one session Internet class will take place on November 2, from 9 am to noon, and cover basic search techniques for finding health information on the World Wide Web. The cost is $19.

To register, or obtain further information, call Hilda DeLucia, Community Services Manager, Ashlar of Newtown, 364-3127.
