89ERS

The 89ers defeated Aspectuck 36-6 on Saturday.

Oberstadt, Mesko, Reszoly, Vavrek, and DeVellis (2) scored the touchdowns that keyed the dominating victory.

DeVellis started it off by stripped a ball from an Aspetuck runner and running it back for a quick TD.

Nicky Tarantino, Brian_Mesko and Kevin McCarthy had solid runs on offense while CJ_Portolese, Nick Tierno, Rob Norling and Chris Dennis led the defense.

JUNIOR PEE WEES

The Junior Pee Wees dominated Aspetuck on their way to a convincing 32-7 win – their first of the 2000 season.

Opening the game on defense, Tom Jackman, Brett Mauro, Lucas Vendel and Sean Ryan all teamed up to stop Aspetuck in four plays, with only two yards gained. After the Newtown offense fumbled the ball away, the defense came back and turned in nice plays by Zach Conger and Justin McGrath.

Newtown soon got on the board, however, on a touchdown run by Tyler Tarantino. Greg Rodden cleared the way with a good block and the ‘Hawks had a 6-0 lead. That soon turned into a 13-0 lead on a TD run by Jeffrey Davis. McGrath added the extra point.

Aspetuck was able to score on its next possession and added an extra point to trim the Newtown lead to 13-7. But that would be as close as Aspetuck would get. Mark Schuenemann followed some key blocks and scored a touchdown to put Newtown ahead, 19-7.

Josh Friedman made a nice tackle on the ensuing kick and moments later Chuck Brooks intercepted an Aspetuck pass to give the ball back to the ‘Hawks. Tarantino, Scheunemann, Cody Marus and McGrath all had nice carries and then Davis carried the ball into the end zone for his second TD of the game and a 26-7 Newtown lead at the end of the half.

In the second half, the defense made short work of Aspetuck again. Mauro, Jackman, Conger and Vendel all had solid plays with Michael Maher knocking down an Aspetuck passing attempt. Although the Newtown offense was then stopped on its next series, the defense – behind Mauro, Tarantino, Dan DeLaVega, Matt Mascolo and Marus – weren’t budging.

On the next possession for the ‘Hawks, Conger, Marus and Jared Modzelewski all turned in nice runs, setting up a touchdown scamper by Kris Kling. The Junior Pee Wees had their 32-7 lead and went on to the win.

Newtown will travel to Brookfield on Saturday for a 12 noon game.

PEE WEES

The Nighthawks registered their second consecutive shutoit with a 19-0 blanking of the Aspetuck Wildcats last weekend.

The offense opened with a solid, eight-yard gain by runningback Tucker Kass. Quarterback Joey DeVellis found daylight on a keeper and broke open for an electrifying 42-yard touchdown run. Although Ryan McGrath’s extra-point attempt was blocked, Newtown was happy to take an early 6-0 lead.

Behind the defensive efforts of Joe Collins, Steve Orrico, Drew Adamek, Eric Drher and Joe Bowen, the line dug in and held off the Aspetuck attack.

Newtown’s second offensive series demonstrated a balanced attack as Tom Hutchison, Tommy Gaboriault and Tucker Kass marched the ball downfield behind the line of Cody Shpunt, Brian Stickles, Ryan Martin, Bowen, McGrath, Orrico and Collins. Their efforts were rewarded as DeVellis found McGrath for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

Newtown’s offensive versatility was evident in the third possession as runningbacks Scott Suhoza and Kass ran well with Brian Poeltl executing a nice halfback option play, hitting Kass for a 10-yard reception.

The defense would once again deny Aspetuck a first down as Adamek, Collins and Shpunt were credited with tackles behind the line.

DeVellis took control of the offense in the last scoring attempt of the first half. He completed passes to Shpunt and Kass for 10 and eight yards, respectively, and then took an option play and scampered 40 yards behind a crushing block by Kass for another TD.

McGrath, stopped on his previous two extra point attempts, executed a nice faked kick attempt, and found Kass in the end zone for the point after and a 19-0 Newtown lead.

The defensive highlights for the second half included a huge hit by lineman Ken Cardelle and Joe Collins, which caused an Aspetuck fumble (recovered by Martin). The tackle of the day was registered by linebacker David Modzelewski.

Offensively in the second half, Suhoza and Stickles ran well behind the efforts of linemen Matt Kuruc and Mike Shannon. Suhoza would also execute a halfback option pass and find Kass for a gain of 10 yards.

The Nighthawks will visit Brookfield on Saturday, September 23, for a 10 am game at Cadigan Field.

JUNIOR MIDGETS

The Junior Midgets routed Aspetuck, 34-0, with the strong offensive line work of Jonathan Butler, Ryan Del Rossi, Joe Brewer, and Brian Hunt.

Carey Olsen ran 48 yards for the first Nighthawk touchdown and then Roy Scheunemann and RJ Marus proceeded to set up the second touchdown for Olsen. In the second quarter, Billy Beatty recovered a fumble and Scheunemann scored a third touchdown with an extra point kicked by Marc Ingerman.

Kevin Wasicki tossed a nice pass to Olsen in the third, with Olsen legging out an 88-yard touchdown. Later, Jeff LeVasseur ran 72 yards on a broken play to set up a fourth-quarter TD by Marus. Ingerman added the extra point.

John Lewis turned in a fine defensive performance, intercepting a pass to kill an Aspetuck drive.

MIDGETS

With a 25-0 decision over Aspetuck, the Midgets earned their first win of the season last weekend.

In the first half Matt Selezan made a touchdown, then Keith Gotthardt had a terrific run of about 35 yards for the second touchdown.  Gotthardt scored again, giving Newtown an 18-0 lead at half-time.

Derek Pattison scored a touchdown in the second half and John Collins ran it in for the extra point.  In the third and fourth quarters, TJ Sequenzia, Kenny Stella and Keith Gotthardt each had a fumble recovery.  In the course of the game, Brendan O’Connor had four tackles for losses and the offensive line including Scott Regnery, Josh Liska, JD McGrath, Bobby Pattison, and Bob Harrison executed their blocks very well.
