911 Hoax

Police report a September 8 incident involving an Emergency 911 telephone call, which later proved to be a hoax.

Police said they responded to Hilario’s Service Center at 131 Mt Pleasant Road (Route 6) in Hawleyville about 5:45 pm, after receiving a report via a 911 call that a burglary had occurred.

Police said their investigation found that the 911 call, which was allegedly made by Alexa Larsen, 47, of 123 Lakeview Terrace, was a hoax.

Larsen was spotted riding her motorized scooter on Mt Pleasant Road, after which she was stopped for police questioning, according to police.

Police then charged Larsen with misuse of the Emergency 911 system and with driving with a suspended license. After processing the arrest, police released Larsen on $250 bail for a September 23 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Key Found

On September 13, a person found a car key, which was attached to a blue key chain with the word “Healey” on it, police said, adding the key was found in front of the driveway entrance for 23 Church Hill Road, which is the office address for Dr Joshua Baum, an orthodontist.

Police are holding the key for safekeeping. To claim it, the owner should visit the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

Dodgingtown Crash

Motorist Jennifer Singer, 44, of 18 Rock Ridge Road, who was driving a 2014 BMW X-1 SUV northward on Hattertown Road, struck the rear end of a 2000 Jeep Wrangler SUV, driven by Daniel Pompa, 61, of 3 Ferris Road, which was waiting at a stop sign on Hattertown Road at its intersection with Route 302 at about 6:06 pm on August 31, police said.

Pompa reported pain and was evaluated and then released at the accident scene by ambulance staffers, police said. Police said they issued Singer a written warning for following too closely.

Car Off Road

Police report a one-vehicle accident on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with High Rock Road, about 2:47 am on September 13.

Police report motorist Ivana Flores, 24, of Naugatuck was driving a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan eastward on Berkshire Road, when the vehicle drove off the right road shoulder and struck a utility pole.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Flores an infraction for making a restricted turn and for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Hazardous Intersection

Police report that a two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Little Brook Lane and Button Shop Road in Botsford about 1:24 pm on September 7.

The collision involved motorist Scott Gregson, 18, of 4 Papoose Hill Road, who was driving a 2002 Chrysler Concorde sedan, and motorist Daria Maruschak, 26, of 9 Bristle Lane, who was driving a 2014 Jeep Compass SUV, according to police.

Police said that at the time of the accident, brush obscured the view at the intersection, adding that a stop sign posted on Little Brook Lane was not clearly visible. There were no injuries. Police said they took no enforcement.

Interstate Evading

State police report that in investigating an accident at about 2 am on September 5 on eastbound I-84 near Exit 11, they charged motorist Joseph Achenbach, 32, of Watertown with evading responsibility, failure to drive in the proper lane, and failure to have automotive insurance.

Achenbach was released on $1,000 bail for a September 21 court appearance, state police said.

Rear-Ender

At about 3:50 pm on September 11, motorist Jonathan Wanzer, 46, of 14 Surrey Trail, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck westward on Interstate 84, near the Parmalee Hill Road overpass, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Uvaldo Merlin, 37, of Oxford, who was driving a 1997 Honda Accord, state police said.

Both drivers reported pain, but did not want medical attention at the scene, state police said.

Uvaldo received an infraction for following too closely and for driving without a driver’s license, state police said.

I-84 Accident

State police said that at about 9:22 pm on September 8 on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10, trucker Orlando Garlaza, 43, of Kutztown, Penn., who was driving a 2012 Freightliner truck, sideswiped motorist Amanda Geer, 32, of Waterford, who was driving a 2010 Hyundai Elantra.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

Pickup Vs SUV

Police report a two-vehicle collision in the parking area in front of Newtown General Store at 43 Main Street at 12:13 pm on September 15.

The accident involved motorist Michael Petrucci, 61, of Danbury, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck and was backing out of a parking space, and motorist Merita Sedaliu, 52, of 8 Tilson Lane, who was driving a 2015 Honda CRV and was entering a parking space, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Botsford Accident

At about 4:39 pm on September 10, motorist Matthew Hanson, 27, of Eaton, who was driving a 2012 Volkswagen Passat sedan northward on Swamp Road, stopped at a stop sign at that road’s intersection with Botsford Hill Road, after which the Volkswagen was struck from behind by motorist Anamaria Tedesco, 68, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry sedan, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Tedesco for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

House Burglary

Police received a report about 3 pm on September 10 informing them that a house burglary had occurred on Taunton Ridge Road.

The incident took place near the intersection of Taunton Ridge Road, Glenmor Drive, and Dylan Drive.

Police report that sometime between 8 am and 2:40 pm on September 10, someone entered the house through a rear window and then stole “a large amount of jewelry.” A loss value for the items stolen was not available.

Police are investigating the burglary/larceny and ask anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841. The crime is Case #2015-20028.

A two-vehicle accident occurred shortly before 4 pm Thursday, September 10, in the area of 107 Berkshire Road. A head-on collision between a Mazda MPV ES minivan (above) that appeared to be traveling south and an Isuzu utility truck (below) that appeared to be traveling north left both vehicles with heavy front-end damage. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported at least one person to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Newtown Police and Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue firefighters also responded to the scene. Following the accident, northbound traffic was detoured over Zoar Road for about four hours, while southbound traffic was allowed through the scene at intervals. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified of the accident. Enforcement information was not available as of September 17.         
A motorist driving eastward on Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook Center about 4:40 pm on September 14 noticed that smoke was coming from his 2004 Porsche Cayenne SUV, after which he stopped and exited the burning vehicle at the bridge that crosses above the Pootatuck River. Motorist Kurt Damas of Bay Shore, N.Y., was not injured in the incident. The burning SUV emitted a plume of thick, black smoke. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company firefighters responded to the scene to extinguish the fire, said Chief Bill Halstead. Besides destroying the SUV, the fire damaged the road pavement, some flower planters, and a nearby lightpost. The incident caused road closures and travel delays in the area during the evening rush.
