‘DARREN LAGO: INAPPROPRIATIONS’ AT DAVIDSON CONTEMP. w/1 cut

avv/gs set 9/17 #712552

NEW YORK CITY — Davidson Contemporary presents an exhibition of new work by Darren Lago, “Inappropriations,” on view September 29–November 3.

“Inappropriations” is Lago’s second solo exhibition at Davidson Contemporary, following his successful 2005 show, “Psycho Plastic Works.” This time, the British-born artist has executed more than 25 works that directly related to leading artists of the Twentieth Century.

The title “Inappropriations” has several connotations. One is comically literal: the artist has appropriated existing works from a treasure trove of inspirations in a way that is seemingly inappropriate to the conventional eye. Viewers are forced to either cooperate with what could be construed as a frivolous, distasteful use of these masterworks, or engage the appropriations with a more cerebral point of view as Lago has done.

In this series, the artist has chosen to borrow canonical works by some of the greats of Modern art; this act is not intended to demean but to return these works to a position of newness where they can be seen as fresh artworks, not established commodities.

The series also involves the use of construction toys and activities associated with childhood play, imparting an attitude of innocent awe to these appropriations. This workmanlike posture of reverence echoes the veneration of such respected artists in the museum “cathedrals” of Modern art around the world.

Like the appropriations of Richard Pettibone, Lago’s series makes its impersonations obvious, yet the production methods behind these works are significantly different. They are accessibly homemade, and in some cases even ready-made.

The gallery is at 724 Fifth Avenue. For information, www.davidsoncontemporary.com or 212-759-7555.
