To the Editor,

There is no place that means home to me more than Newtown, and I am excited to be running for the Board of Finance to serve all of you. From the first time I walked Main Street during the Holiday Festival to volunteering at the Sandy Hook library, I have always felt the welcoming kindness of the folks in Newtown. That is saying a lot because I have lived in six other states, yet I feel like Newtown is and has always been my hometown.

This is my first time running for a board, but I have served as a volunteer in many ways. I was a board member and chairperson of the Newtown Youth and Family Services agency. I opened my home to several foster children, some children from as far away as Ecuador and Micronesia. If you already know me, you may know some of the hilarious stories I have trying to communicate with adolescents who haven’t learned English yet. My Newtown neighbors and the schools opened their hearts and doors to these children who are now adults and thriving back home thanks to all of the support they received here.

I hope everyone in Newtown feels safe, secure, and welcome. I am running for the Board of Finance to continue the work that has made this such a wonderful place to call home. As a Board of Finance member, I will work to ensure we have safe streets where our children and seniors can be comfortable enjoying our parks, Main Street, and shops.

We all deserve exceptional leadership that will develop responsible plans to keep our town financially secure while prioritizing vital services like public safety, education, and infrastructure. I will never forget that I serve all the citizens of Newtown. I will honor your opinions and keep focused on what is right for Newtown.

Sincerely,

Laura Miller

Newtown
