Despite falling short to visiting Brookfield 93-85 in the season-opening meet, on September 9, Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team had some strong individual - and relay - performances.

The Nighthawks were led by Mary Hufziger, who set two pool records, breaking the marks held in the 100 yard freestyle and 100 backstroke events, both dating back to the middle 1990s.

The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Hufziger, Olivia Renkert, Maddie Carter, and Julia DiMartino started the meet off with a first-place finish, with a time of 1:59.85.

Carter was second in the 200 individual medley, making her final touch in 2:25.69. Lianna Perazzo was third in the 50 free, sprinting to the finish in 28.43.

In the diving competition, Sarah MacMullan took home third-place accolades with a score of 181.35.

Out of the diving break, Hufziger pulled in another first-place finish, winning the 100 free in a time of 54.60.

Carter was runner-up in the 500, logging a time of 5:41.80.

The 200 free relay team of Perazzo, Renkert, Grace Bertsche, and DiMartino was second in 1:54.92. And the 200 relay team of Abigail Gregory, Amanda Berry, Anastazia Luci-Bernard, and Kira Kelly placed third in 2:02.95.

Hufziger was fastest in the 100 backstroke race in a time of 1:01.26 and Emma Riebe placed third in the backstroke event, clocking in with a time of 1:10.94.

In the 100 breaststroke race, Lily van der Kloef was third in 1:21.84.

Newtown's 400 free relay team, comprising Carter, Berry, Cecilia Schoeni, and Hufziger, was third in 4:08.54.
