Field Hockey Team Beats Weston In Opener
Newtown High School's field hockey team got the season going in a positive direction by notching a 2-1 come-from-behind win over visiting Weston, at Treadwell Park, on September 13.
Emma Schmid-Tharni set up Lauren Zimmerman for the equalizer in the opening half, and Emily Dirga converted off a scramble in front of the goal shortly after a Newtown penalty corner, in the second half.
Goaltender Nathalie Shaker made several saves, including key stops to preserve the lead late in the game. Shaker is hopeful the victory can help push the Nighthawks into winning ways going forward.
"It's really important to win the first game to get our confidence up for the rest of the season," Shaker said.
"It's a great feeling," Newtown Coach Stephanie Kearns said of the win, adding that the Hawks did a good job of finding openings in the field to move the ball.
Kearns noted that the play of Megan Kelleher, Kaitlyn Reilly, and Izzy Kaiser was key in Newtown's victory.
