Ukrainian Festival Rescheduled To September 25

The 36th annual Ukrainian Festival will be held on Sunday, September 25, at Paproski’s Castle Hill Farm, 5 Sugar Lane (off Route 302). The festival has been rescheduled from its original date of August 28, when Tropical Storm Irene forced its postponement. It is also a different location than usual for the festival.

The day begins at 11 am with the Divine Liturgy celebrated by Right Reverend Archpriest Mihai Dubovici, pastor of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church of Bridgeport. The church choir will sing the responses.

Ukrainian food — including varenyky (potato dumplings like pyrogies), holubchi (stuffed cabbage), kobassa (kielbasa) and kapucta (sweet fried cabbage) — made by the parish women, under the direction of Taras and Maria Slevinsky, will be available for purchase along with picnic-style food.

A lively program, organized by Roman Stanislawsky, will begin at 2:30 pm. It will consist of ethnic Ukrainian dancing performed by the Kolononka Ukrainian Dance Group of Stamford, and Ukrainian songs performed by Gregory Kylinskyj, Mukola Maksymiuk, Anatolij Krytej and a duet by the Korenovski Sisters. There will also be an exhibit of Ukrainian arts and crafts coordinated by Gloria and Chrystyna Horbaty, and Ukrainian articles for sale.

Other entertainment throughout the day, organized by Stephen and Diana Paproski, include volleyball and horseshoe tournaments, hay rides, corn maze, pony rides, petty zoo, Moon Walk, chess, and a Varenyky Eating Contest.

Admission is $2. There is plenty of free off-street parking, and the festival will be held rain or shine.

For information, call Gloria P. Horbaty (203-269-5909) or Stephen Paproski (203-426-5487).
