NSA Sends Students To College With Over $200,000 In Awards

The Newtown Scholarship Association, Inc (NSA) announced its scholarship awards for the 2011-12 academic year recently.

All awards have just been finalized, with 75 students receiving $207,000 in need-based awards. Stephanie Gaston, chairperson of the NSA Awards Committee, said, “The total dollar amount of awards this year is once again a reflection of the growing need in our community and the ever-escalating tuition costs.”

NSA was established as a nonprofit organization in 1937 to promote and advance the education of secondary school graduates residing in Newtown by providing financial aid to deserving students. In 1937, a single $50 scholarship was awarded. In its history, the NSA has helped more than 1,000 students achieve a postsecondary education and awarded more than $3 million in need-based scholarships. Almost 70 percent of contributions come from generous individuals and businesses primarily from Newtown, with the remaining from fund raising events and sponsorships.

For more information about establishing a scholarship or making a donation, contact Stephanie Gaston at 203-426-2500 or NSAawards@gmail.com.
