Aspetuck bore the full brunt of Newtownâs offensive fury as Kyle OâConnor (Midgets â four TDs) and Kyle Vignone (Junior Midgets â five TDs) continue to shine on the American Youth Football field and led their respective teams to wins.
At the same time, Julian Dunn powered the Mighty Mite Blues to a 27-0 win over Ridgefield with a pair of TDs (on runs of 60 and 45 yards).
Here are the results â
MIDGETS
Newtown 26, Aspetuck 6
A refereeâs inadvertent whistle on the opening kick may have negated an 80-yard touchdown, but it only postponed the seemingly inevitable.
Kyle OâConnor scored on an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, then added three more TDs later in the game, and led the Newtown Midgets to a 26-6 win over Aspetuck last weekend.
OâConnor scored his second touchdown at the end of the first period with the aid of exceptional blocking from Nick Tramontozzi, Taylor Carnes, Tyler Davenport, Zack Dent and Mike Hadgraft. In the second half, OâConnor scored again but the Midgets also got some big runs from Dent, Nick Tarantino and Tory Deakin and a nifty 40-yard pass play from quarterback Tucker Schmidt to Deakin.
All the while, the Newtown defense was shutting Aspetuck down. The D line of Alex Markham, Brendan Blawie, Brian Kuruc, Tim Willmott and Connor McNamara got together and limited Aspetuck to just 33 yards of offense in the first half.
Solid play on both sides of the ball by Kevin Brown and Andrew Buonocore typified the total team effort.
The Midgets will travel to Worcester, Massachusetts next weekend to take on the Worcester Cowboys.
JUNIOR MIDGETS
Newtown 32, Aspetuck 6
Before the Newtown offense even stepped on the field last weekend at Weston High School, the game was essentially over.
Kyle Vignone scored five touchdowns â the first two on punt returns (totaling 119 yards) in the first quarter â and led the Junior Midgets to a convincing 32-6 win over Aspetuck. Vignone also scored TDs running (2) and catching (1) the football.
After the Newtown defense stuffed the Wildcats on their first possession, Aspetuck punted deep and Vignone went 65 yards for the score. On the ensuing possession, the Newtown D once again stopped the Wildcats and Vignone went 54 yards on that punt return for the score.
Kevin OâConnell ran in the extra point and a stunned host team was very quickly down, 13-0.
Andrew Murphy and Cody Fischer recovered fumbles to give the ball back to the offense on the next two Aspetuck drives. After the second fumble recovery, Vignone cut through the middle for a 46-yard touchdown and OâConnell once again ran the extra point in to give Newtown a 20-0 lead at the half.
Aspetuckâs attempt to get back into the game in the third quarter came through the air. OâConnell took that opportunity to shine on defense as well, recording two interceptions from his corner spot to halt Wildcat drives.
It wasnât until late in the third quarter that Aspetuck finally got onto the scoreboard with a 28-yard touchdown pass. Defensive end Keith Reszoly denied the extra point attempt when he dropped the Wildcat runner in the backfield.
The Newtown offense answered right back on the next possession. Quarterback John Fracker connected with Vignone on a swing pass and Vignone took the ball 50 yards for the TD. Vignone would later scored on a 42-yard burst off right tackle.
Max Nacewicz (two sacks), Reszoly, Cody Fischer (sack), James Sharpe, Andrew Murphy and Fracker all made strong plays on defense in the second half.
JPW BLUE
Newtown 13, Ridgefield 13
They were 25 yards away from the end zone â and the win â with 30 seconds left in the game but it the Newtown Junior Midget Blues simply ran out of time against Ridgefield.
Riley Wurtz intercepted a Ridgefield pass and brought it down to the 25 late in the fourth quarter, but the Blues had no time outs left and not enough seconds on the clock to snap the 13-13 tie.
But the fact that the Blues were in position to win the game was amazing.
Down 13-6 after a Ridgefield touchdown with 3:20 left to play, Justin DeVellis took the kick and brought it all the way down to the 25. From there the great blocking by Ryan Manion, Luke Moore, Barrett and Cooper Gold on some nifty reverse plays by Reynolds, Wurtz and DeVellis allowed DeVellis to scored a touchdown.
And on the critical extra point try, Drew Tarantino scampered in for the tie.
The Newtown defense was strong at the start with Dean Baye, James Leidlein, Wilder Carnes and Mike Senf stalling Ridgefieldâs opening drive. After giving up a touchdown to Ridgefield early in the second quarter, the defense tightened up again to stop the important extra point.
Then on the ensuing kickoff, the Blues were able to get into great field position and after powerful runs by Phillip Reynolds, Baye, DeVellis and Wurtz, Wurtz was able to punch it in for a 6-6 tie midway through the second quarter.
The offensive line â Nick Pedalino, Kyle Morrisey, Alec Woznick and tight end Christian Barrett â opened the holes and allowed the offense to operate on all cylinders.
In the third, the Newtown defense got stronger as Jack McManus, Chris Stanton, Gold and Reynolds stepped up their games. But in the third, a Newtown drive stalled on their 10 yard line as a fine pass from Andrew Tarantino to JP Kitzmiller fell inches short of a Newtown first down and the locals had to give up the ball on downs.
With 3:50 remaining in the game Ridgefield was able to get outside on a fourth-and-nine play and scored after a long run. This time the extra point try was good and Ridgefield led 13-6 with just 3:20 left to play.
But the locals rallied for the tie.
The Blues will travel to Aspetuck next week and hope to have Zach Clyne back on the field after sitting out two weeks with an injury.
PEE WEES
Bethel 14, Newtown 6
William Arndt scored on a quarterback keeper early in the first quarter, but that was all the scoring the Newtown Pee Wees could muster in a 14-6 loss to Bethel.
Kicker Josh Barrett made the two-point conversion twice, but both times penalties nullified the conversion.
Andrew Cebry and Michael Lord helped set the pace for a solid ground game, however, turnovers again cost the Pee-Wees as they were unable to capitalize on two long drives and came away empty. The offensive line played well all game long, led by Michael Cascone, Jack Curry, Matt Vavrek, Will Fletcher, Louis Rabb and Trey Trudell.
The defense also played well despite a 55-yard pass on the last play of the half that gave Bethel a 7-6 lead going into the break.
Several nice tackles were made by Sean Ross, Arndt, Jacob Enriquez and Brendan McNamara to anchor the defense.
The Pee Wees will travel to Weston this week to take on Aspetuck.
MIGHTY MITE BLUE
Newtown 27, Ridgefield 0
Another week, another shutout.
One week after pinning a 30-0 defeat on Monroe, the Mighty Mite Blues slapped a 27-0 defeat on Ridgefield at Hawley School.
Colton Smith blasted off the right tackle on the second play from scrimmage and went 50 yards for the touchdown. Later in the first quarter, Julian Dunn put on a running back exhibition of speed and power by stiff arming and sprinting for TD runs of 60 and 45 yards, respectively.
Finally, late in the second quarter, after a Ridgefield turnover, Jonathan Sherman scampered 10 yards on a quarterback bootleg around left end for the closing Newtown score.
Jack Martin and Jack Lago added points after the TDs.
On defense, the interior line of Matt Bouton, Nick Samuelson, Steven Grasso, Eric Street and Nick Strokis dominated the line of scrimmage and caused seven Ridgefield turnovers. This, coupled with the linebacker and defensive back play of Colin Reilly, Max Rucinski, Julian Dunn, Colton Smith, Jack Lago, and Jack Martin, allowed the Ridgefield offense to secure only one first down the entire game.
MIGHTY MITE GOLD
Bethel 13, Newtown 12
Newtown scored first behind good blocking by Jacob Burden, Connor LeMay, and Eric Cascone and shortly after Austin Babyak, Markus Elken and Nick Lotrecchiano stole the ball from Bethel, which allowed Lotrecchiano to score to give the locals a 12-0 lead.
But Bethel was able to score before the first half ended to make and, after a hard fought 3rd period, Bethel was able to control the clock and score with six seconds left to win.
