Newtown Historical Society To Host 19th Century Educational Experience At Reopened Little Red Schoolhouse
Newtown Historical Society will host a special event on Sunday, September 22, at Middle Gate Elementary School’s Little Red Schoolhouse, 7 Cold Springs Road.
After months of dedicated restoration work, the schoolhouse will reopen to the public, offering a unique opportunity to experience 19th Century education firsthand.
The event will feature the Historical Society’s well-known period reenactor, “Miss Melissa,” who will take participants on a journey back in time. Dressed in period attire, Miss Melissa will conduct lessons just as they would have been taught in the 1800s, offering an authentic glimpse into the educational practices of the era.
In addition to the educational experience, guests can enjoy cold apple cider and participate in outdoor games that were popular in the 19th Century. The activities will provide a fun and engaging way to connect with history and the community.
The reopening of the Little Red Schoolhouse is especially meaningful, as it comes after the building was vandalized last spring. The historical society has worked tirelessly to restore the schoolhouse, with the support of generous community members and private donors. Their contributions have been instrumental in bringing this beloved landmark back to life.
“We’re thrilled to welcome the community back to the Little Red Schoolhouse,” said Melissa Houston, president of Newtown Historical Society. “This event not only honors our past but celebrates the strength and unity of our community in the face of adversity. We’re grateful for the outpouring of support that made this reopening possible.”
The event is open to all ages and will run from noon to 3 pm. Admission is free, though donations to support Newtown Historical Society’s ongoing preservation efforts are greatly appreciated.
