Louis J. Saccone, 85, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Sylvia De la Victoria Saccone, died suddenly September 9 in St Vincent’s Medical Center. Born in Bridgeport, December 3, 1929, he was a son of the late Mary Feola and Peter Saccone and was a lifelong resident of Bridgeport.

In addition to his loving wife of 54 years, Sylvia, survivors include his siblings, Rose O’Donnell of Newtown, Peter Saccone, and his wife Connie, of Newtown, Thomas Saccone, and Olga De la Victoria, of Florida, and Paulette Corner of Shelton; five children, Joseph Saccone of Bridgeport and his children, Christopher and Corey, Peter Saccone of Bridgeport, Lisa Saccone of Derby and her children, James and John Piazza, Gina Saccone and former son-in-law Vinnie Boucher of Naugatuck, and their children, Sophie and Sylvie Boucher, and William Saccone, and his wife Cynthia, of Florida and their children, William, Isabella, and Gabriela; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr Saccone earned his bachelor and master degrees in Education from the University of Bridgeport. Before his retirement, he was a math teacher at Notre Dame High School in Fairfield, with more than 35 years of dedicated service.

During his years of playing and coaching sports, he was affectionately known as the “Iron Horse.” He enjoyed the years he spent as a football coach at Notre Dame High School, highlighted by the school’s only State Championship season in 1964. He also coached at the University of Bridgeport and Fairfield University, as well as spending time as a baseball umpire, and as a basketball and football referee, also serving as MBIAC Commissioner. He was the only five-star letterman athlete and first person to score more than 1,000 points at the University of Bridgeport.

He was an honorary member of Fairchild Wheeler Golf Club and made three holes-in-one during his golf career. Recognized as an outstanding athlete, Mr Saccone was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Notre Dame in 1985, the University of Bridgeport in 1988; in 1990 to the Greater Bridgeport Oldtimers’ Association, and in 2008 the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame. He was also extremely proud to be honored by the Boys Club on numerous occasions for various achievements.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday, September 16, at 10 am, in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call Tuesday, September 15, from 4 to 8 pm.
