Hawks Swim And Run To Wins

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving and girls’ cross country teams both earned season-opening wins on Tuesday.

The cross country team defeated host Bethel 26-31, New Fairfield 26-29, and Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport 15-50 for a quick 3-0 start to the campaign.

Newtown’s fastest runner was the fourth overall finisher as Hannah Schwartz completed the course in a time of 21:43. Brianne Moulder was sixth in 22:20, Reagan Cerney placed seventh in 22:32. Talia Fippiano was tenth in 23:40, and Sarah Craig came in 12th in 23:41.

In the pool, the Nighthawks got the season started with a 100-75 win over New Fairfield. Results are as follows:

200 Yard Medley Relay: First, Kelley Baylis, Zoe Eggleston, Eliza Eggleston, Amy Martinelli; third, Kim Gates, Annika Fagerholm, Sally Martinelli, Katie Stawiasz.

200 Freestyle: First, Amanda Mele; second, Abby Fagerholm.

200 Individual Medley: Second, Zoe Eggleston; third, Megan McDonald.

50 Free: First, Amy Martinelli; second: Charlotte Gray; third, Kelley Baylis.

Diving: First, Natalie Poeltl; second, Gillian Eckwall; third, Noelle Benson.

100 Butterfly: First, Eliza Eggleston; second, Sally Martinelli.

100 Free: First, Amy Martinelli; second, Amanda Mele; third, Charlotte Gray.

500 Free: First, Abby Fagerholm; second, Annika Fagerholm; third, Megan McDonald.

200 Free Relay: First, Kelley Baylis, Amanda Mele, Charlotte Gray, Amy Martinelli; third, Kim Gates, Clare Donnelly, Claire Maurer, Sally Martinelli.

100 Backstroke: First, Kelley Baylis; second, Kim Gates; third, Bridget Duero.

100 Breaststroke: First, Zoe Eggleston; second, Annika Fagerholm; third, Jane Sclafani.

400 Free Relay: First, Eliza Eggleston, Amanda Mele, Charlotte Gray, Abby Fagerholm; third, Clare Donnelly, Clare Maurer, Ellen Atkinson, Bridget Duero.
