Occupation: Iâm an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the IBEW Local 48 â also known as âI Been Every Where.â I work mostly at big commercial jobs, so I do travel a bit at times. I have a remodeling business on the side, RJM Home Improvements, LLC, that keeps me busy when the union doesnât have work for us.
Family: I have a son, Nicholas, who is 20 years old and going to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and my daughter Jennifer just graduated from Newtown High School in 2007. She is going to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. We also have a 7-year-old, Ricky, who is in the second grade at Middle Gate School. My wife is Pamela, and weâve been married 25 years this November.
Pets: We have a rat terrier named Thunder. Thunder is 3 years old. We have a rabbit, too, named Chewy. Heâs about 5 years old.
How long have you lived in Newtown? Weâve been here since January 1983. We lived on Dayton Street for two years, then moved to Woodbury for a year. We moved back to Buttonball Drive in Sandy Hook and were there for 15 years before moving to Little Brook Lane seven years ago.
What do you like to do in your free time? I like sports. I play softball. As a matter of fact, most people know me as âSocko,â a nickname I got from a neighbor when I played on his softball team. My daughter played softball in school and I still go to a lot of the high school games. We like to go to the beach with the kids and camping is big with us. Both my wife and I like to scuba dive, too, though we donât go as often as we used to.
Who is your favorite sports team? The Yankees. I like the Mets, the Giants â I grew up in New York, so I like all of the New York teams.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? We like to go to Lake George, to the Narrow Island for camping. We have gone up there a lot, especially when the kids were younger.
What is the best thing about Newtown? It has changed a lot, but it still has the same friendliness. I used to do the Haunted Yard on Halloween on Buttonball until we had about 3,000 people show up one year. Then I did it as a fundraiser for Newtown Youth Services in the 90s. We held it behind Ricciâs Salon, at Dickinson Park for a couple of years, and in some other locations. It got the whole community involved and it was really good.
Do you have a hero? My hero was Mickey Mantle of the Yankees. I grew up with the Yankees and I got attached to him. Itâs a shame there is no one around anymore to be a hero. Itâs hard to be loyal when players jump from team to team. My father was my hero, too. He had six boys, but my dad and I loved sports and did more together than my other brothers. My dad was my best man at our wedding.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? Eating ice cream. I love vanilla fudge. Sometimes I pack so much in a bowl that the half-gallon container is nearly gone. I used to buy Sealtest, but now I usually buy Friendlyâs.
