Hospital Thinking Pink For Breast Cancer Month

DANBURY — This October, Danbury Hospital is on a mission to ensure that when people think pink, they think of breast cancer. The regional medical facility is hosting a series of complimentary “Think Pink” information sessions geared toward women at various community groups and businesses throughout the region in honor of the color of the popular breast cancer awareness ribbon and to mark October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while mammography screenings have been shown to reduce breast cancer mortality, the number of women getting annual mammograms is declining. Recent studies further show that screening mammography can reduce mortality by approximately 20–35 percent in women 50–69 and approximately 20 percent in women 40–49 and are recommended yearly.

Danbury Hospital’s free “Think Pink” events will include a one-hour educational program about the latest screening options for early detection, treatments, and living with the diagnosis. Most importantly, Danbury Hospital’s team of breast health experts will replace fear with facts as participants will be able to feel models of both normal and atypical breasts.

Attendees will also be given the opportunity to schedule a mammogram at the session. In addition, patients who are aged 50 and over will be encouraged to schedule an annual colonoscopy as colon cancer is the number three cause of cancer deaths in the United States among women.
