Devil’s Den Preserve Seeking Conservation Volunteers

Weston — The Nature Conservancy’s Devil’s Den Preserve is seeking volunteers for several local trail management projects that include pruning vegetation, painting fresh trail blazes, and installing erosion bars to control trail erosion. Volunteers are also being sought who can assist in a local beach cleanup and in projects of the Saugatuck River Watershed Partnership, including a water quality study and a river cleanup day.

Devil’s Den is the largest nature preserve in southwestern Connecticut, with more than 1,700 acres and 21-plus miles of hiking trails. The Den is home to hundreds of species of plants, birds, and mammals, and boasts charcoal production sites dating back to the 19th Century.

While the preserve is maintained on a daily basis by a small staff of conservationists, community support is needed for a variety of stewardship projects and large-scale studies.

Volunteer opportunities vary from light office work to strenuous trail work and brush clearing. All skill levels are welcome; no prior conservation experience is necessary.

For more information on what’s going on this fall at Devil’s Den, contact volunteer coordinator Lia Mastropolo at 203-226-4991 extension 203 or by e-mail at LMastropolo@tnc.org.
